Hi guys, hope this is in the correct section.
My kids school is being recommended to be shut by the County Council.

Im asking all the members to take 1 minute of their time and sign the petition
with their name and email address,no donation required.

If we get over 5000 signatures it has to go to the Houses of Parliament and it will show we have the backing and support.

Many thanks to all who give their support.

Andy.

Why are they suggesting it is closed, what alternative is being offered ?

They want to close it to save money basically.
There is a nearby school on Special Measures that has a terrible record but was recently rebuilt because a pupil burnt it down is being kept open.

Some of the Gedling School will be put there but all this will do is put more strain on the surrounding areas.

Any transport funding to alternative schools comes in if pupils have to travel more than 7 miles which is a joke.

Please take a 1 minute to vote guys, all votes will help the cause.

signed matey, hope it works out for the best!

We went through all this last year, massive local campaign, press involved including tv, thousands of signatures, there was even a 3 week sit-in, yet the council still shut the school.

I'll sign it though, good luck.

I'm no issues with your campaign but I had a quick look at the latest ofsted report (I assume you are in Nottingham) and not to be to negative you have two things going against you.

At under 600 pupils, the school is small for a secondary in a inner city. I suspect other schools around the area are bigger.

Your ofsted overall rating was inadequate which is the lowest rating possible. Results were below national average and unfortunately that is still something the LEA looks at. The closest secondary schools I could find (Arnold Hill School & Carlton le Willows School) scored a 1 and 2 in their ofsted.

I hope your campaign goes well but looking at it from an outsiders POV its going to be an uphill battle. Good luck.

My partner has just come back from a governers meeting and the ofsted report has been distorted and vital information has been left off.
School attendance is 93% which is good for any school.

The nearest school is Frank Wheldon which was recently rebuilt because a pupil burnt it down. This school is under special measures and has a worse report than Gedling.
No school is perfect but shutting any school is surely a bad thing.

Keep signing please.

That had a pretty bad report. I would look at starting to ensure you kids don't end up there. What is the process, are they offering you are choice of where your kids go.

As much as we (the public) would like to have infinate resource to spend on education, reality is that budgets are tight right now and only getting tighter.
Shutting schools can make sense if there are not enough pupils to justify the school being there and the money can be better spent elsewhere. I know its a really difficult subject and personal when you have kids at a school under review for closure.

Have they stated why the school is closing. Normally it is because of falling numbers or building needs major repair.

I've signed it hope there's an happy ending

There are 169 spaces available in the Gedling Borough area and there are 639 kids aat Gedling school.

Guy from the LEA has said the kids need to walk anyway because so many kids are obese!

Not alot been said yet but Frank Wheldon have spaces but this school is under special measures and most wont want to go there for the obvious reason, sorry Wheldon.
You only have to look at the peoples comments in the signatures on the petition and you will get a true feeling how the local people think.
Carlton and Gedling are two of the better areas in Nottingham so dont think this is a rough school.
Will see what happens but all we can do as parents and pupils is hope something good comes from this and they keep it open.

I did hear a whisper that Gedling isnt the only school they are going to shut so it looks bad.
As for the building being in a bad state it has been recently refurbished and is classed as a Specialist Science College.

I have done it mate.
But I want to add my 2p worth. If this other local school has places and has been recently rebuilt then with help from good concerned parents (Like you obviously are) then this recently refurbished school can become a great school. These schools only become so bad that special measures are implemented due to the "locals" snubbing that school because there is an "easy" alternative. If more parents took an interest like you and your misses then maybe there wouldn't be any schools under these special measures. More parents should take an interest in the school that is closest to them (if possible). Like I say these "Bad" schools don't become bad overnight and with an active Board of Governors with a good parental presence I cant help thinking that some of these places could/would become great.
Anyway sorry for the rant lol but I signed your petition anyway, because It is something you care about and would like to think the favour would be returned if ever needed.

Know what you mean mate but we all want our kids to go to best school in the area we live in so you will always get some schools better than others and i guess you cant help but choose the school that is doing best.

I wouldnt say parents always take an easy option and put their kids in better schools. If this was a case then i would have moved mine long ago.
We all have our opinions and i respect yours.
The facts are the state is in a mess financially but closing schools to save money aint the answer.
Chances are the school will be shut teachers and staff will lose their jobs the land sold and houses built on the land.
This is a short term answer to saving money.Whats next the bloody health service with hospitals shutting, the list goes on.

Andy.
