Installing Recovery Console on an XP Platform

d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

This will help you to install the rcovery console on an XP platform that doesn't already have it.

Put an XP set up disc into a cd drive, best to use one with SP2 on it.

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.

4. A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.

5. Restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" appears on the startup menu.

so when you do restart you get a choice of going into XP as normal or the recovery console to perform various recovery tricks.

Advice is you should always have this option available to you in case od system failures.

Try "reg" on the command line when regedit has been disabled. To enable regedit from the command line (where "reg" is available):

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Go to Start > Run and type DXDIAG

Don't be alarmed if your monitor BLANKS out for a sec.

Format C/u: =Formats the COmputers Drive C beyond recovery: ie. if you selling your old drive you might want to use this method of format so it erases it properly so that some one cant use recovery software to steel your data. Takes a little longer to format -erase- but its worth it.

Sorry for slight change of tack but format /u is unconditional format and i was always told it was to format even if errors and the like... it does not make your data unrecoverable... the only way to do this is to use a program designed for it... format is a useless tool for removing personal data....
