I think that the box spoke about originally was the reelbox lite. the reelbox avantgarde seems to be a different range although they look the same to me!

Totally overkill/pointless cable box. Why?

- Wireless (WLAN) via USB 2.0 (Its a cable box, not a computer)
- Wireless (WLAN) via Mini-PCI Express (Its a cable box, not a computer)
- Compact Flash (CF): save pictures using the Operating System etc…. (No.)

- 1x additional Common Interface (internal)
- Exchangeable Front Display in Blue White or Black
- Main Memory expandable up to max. 4GB DDR2 (Umm, 4GB for a cable box? No.)
- CPU upgrade up to max.: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7400 (Umm, I dont want a PC)
- Hard Disk capacity can be upgraded via by SATA, eSATA, FireWire, USB (Dont want a PC)

- 2x DVB-Single tuners according to preference (DVB-S2, -C, -T) (1 Tuner will do fine, make 2 optional upgrade)
- 320 GB SATA Hard Disk (Not needed, make HD an optional upgrade)
- DVD Double Layer Burner (slimline & slot-in) (Pointless, really.)

Internal:
- 3x tuner slots for Reel DVB Cards- All tuners are Plug & Play (2 Slots will do)
- 1x PCI slot (Pointless)
- 1x mini PCI Express slot (Pointless)
- 1x PCI Express (16x) slot (Really pointless)

Periphery and communication:
- 2x 10/100/1000 Mbit Network (RJ-45) (2x is overkill)
- 1x eSATA (eSATA not needed REALLY pointless)
- 4x USB 2.0- 2x FireWire (USB will do, no firewire)

Change all that, and then ill consider buying it.

i agree, in a way. the Avantgarde was supposed to be a NONPC machine, that used a custom designed board... thats now changed.

the problem with the current RC is the software, total junk. VDR is their frontend which is useless, and they claim to be open source but the BSP15 graphics chip is very closed source.

i have been a dev on this project for nearly 3 years. total waste of time

the fact that RB Lite flopped should be a sign to stay away tbh, and RBVista is just another PC in a media centre case... so i agree that there is little point in getting another PC just to watch cable!

this was one of those projects that could have turned out fantastic, but due to some really crappy devs, management and low level hardware its nothing more than an extreamly expensive paperweight.

It's a PC running Linux, what a brilliant and original idea.

: shocked2

maybe I got over excited coz it was going to display HD Channels, and that it was going to be released next month. However if dreambox release the 8000 series I will buy that instead.

VDR may not have the prettiest frontend but when it comes down to doing the job, nothing can be compared to it.
VDR has an extremely large range of plugins so that it can do pretty much everything you would want. The development work is all open source and very active. If you want a media center then VDR with mplayer is all you need.

As for 'a pc running linux' for £500 - sounds good to me especially when it is your webserver, fileserver, dns, dhcp, PABX, streaming server, database and anything else you can throw at it.

Will it be a business success?
Probably not, people like the idea of a box that can give them free tv, and like to be able to play, but give them a box which they will need to configure and use linux then wait for the moans.
Probably about +70% of the people on here would not benefit from this box, and of the 30% that would benefit, 15% have a system built already doing what they want. The other 15% would be split again by cost.
If the +5% that could get this box decide to package some software, then others would start to buy the box, however by then it would be too late so no one will bother.

So overall the conclusion is still the same (but for different reasons), the box is great but unless the price is dropped it will be a waste of time.

I would even hold off if they brought out the 8000 series till more hd channels become avialable dont think vm are goin to have many they are goin to bring out most of there hd stuff by frontrow and on the internet.
