he bought it a year ago so it will be a fake r4ds,

not necessarily so. Original r4's are still on the go got a couple last year and another couple just before Christmas, working perfectly well with all the latest games as long as you update the wood software.

but it does sound like the one he got may be a clone, but not all are.

im pretty sure he has an original,

he was updating from 1.16 to 1.18 which is original r4 firmware.

also in the pics it looks like an original.

add to that he is using a 2gig non sdhc card....

all point to it being an original..

i cant think why its not working...
would like to get ma hands on it.......

i very much doubt it since R4 team stopped manufacturing back in 07 or 08?
