Yes that could affect it, the CPU could not be getting cooled properly. Can you access the bios and stuff?

yes its on vga as that the only connection on the back of pc , if if i try hdmi i have to turn monitor off then back on but says same as vga no signal

Disconnect the hard drive and cd drive

Have you got another GPU to put in ?

Then see if you can boot into bios

Try booting to usb or cd say Hirens CD. If it does it's software not hardware. If it fails and switches off sounds like fan or heatsink thermal paste gone like concrete artic silver your best bet .
If it does boot to Hirens and doesn't shut down there's loads of programs you can check the hard drive on hirens fixboot checkdisk or even grab your files.
If you hear the hard drive swirl, click then die time after time or swirl then your mouse temporary freeze your hard drives on its way out.
You "might" get it to boot long enough to grab stuff off it but don't hold your breath

have not got hirens , when i switch on it basically sees the cd/dvd , hdd then whirls as norm for about 30 secs then think it cuts out fan still spinning , but nothing on screen ,

have tried a diff hard drive just in case it was that

If the screen isn't coming on it sounds like your video card is fooked. Is it on board or a separate one? If it's separate, do you have an on board one you can try?

its a seperate one , no on board one , dont have a spare one to try , will have a scout around

the machine has never beeped even when it boots up , it just gets on with it usually , just took the card out no beep

also checked on the board and there does not seem to be the part that usually emits the beeps

Perhaps a motherboard fault. Randomly turning off previously may suggest a dry joint or failing component which has worsened. What motherboard is in there? Do you have the equipment to take voltage checks?

not to sure what motherboard it is , its the original one that is in the original case which is a advent t12 , so it a few years old , dont have any equipment to do voltage checks , i will try replacing graphics card , and cpu , and see what happens
