Out of control Athlone

Could anyone explain why my processor runs at 99 0r 100% when i log on to the internet.<br />It's a 600 Athlone processor.<br />When I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task all the running programs except of course Explorer & Norton, it still runs at 99%.<br />I also havbe a 1.4 athlone and it runs at about 8% when on the internet. <img src="graemlins/helpme.gif" border="0" alt="[helpme]" />

does sound virussy to me. i would check how your cpu runs on a resource hungry program first. if its defoe a virus ok

My guess would be Norton. Its a known resource hog, although I've heard that norton 360 is better in this respect.

Download the free versions of AVG or Avast, and the norton removal tool (refund available from norton for unused months of a subscription - check their site for details). Boot into safe mode, uninstall norton, reboot into safe mode, install the new AV. Reboot into safe mode, scan for viruses. Reboot normally, check system resources under task manager.

You could also download sysinternals, just the process explorer part if you want, just look down the list, from

Run it and you will be able to find out what it is that is hogging your CPU.
