When I turn on pc and log in it just goes into a black screen and opens up my documents folder. If I press ctrl+alt+del it brings up a vista screen with options such as lock computer, switch user, task manager etc.

I can then go into task manager and manually start explorer as a new task and hey presto It continues to boot all usuall programs and I'm back in business.

Why has this suddenly started happening and is there anything I can do easily to rectify it without having to reload operation sytem etc?

Once you get your explorer up, in run(search bar on startup) type msconfig and just go over all the options there ( start up and services) just chek the boot options aswell as general set them to default if you have to
