over the last few days laptop keeps coming up with your computer is low on memory close open programs
even with nothing running
WTF then shuts down after a bit ??? any advise chap's doing my head in
cheers

What's the OS? Assuming a version of Windoze, run up TaskManager and see what the memory consumption is (it shows what tasks are running and how much memory each is using).

I'd also scan for malware etc. in case you've picked anything nasty up.

Roughly speaking you need:

Windows XP - at least 1Gb
Windows Vista - irrelevant, take an axe to it
Windows 7/8 - at least 4Gb

Try also to check the memory status in system properties ,maybe it is damaged and need to be replaced

Try locating the problem by scanning your open processes via Task Manager. Look around which programs eats your RAM.
If you have succesfully located the .exe right click on it and click on open its folder. If you see suspicious files over there it may be a virus, a trojan or a malware.
Fastest and easiest way to solve this to reinstall you windows. If you dont have any data on the disk, do it asap. Otherwise get a USB docking station and put your hard drive in it. Backup your data via this USB docking station to another computer and you can resintall your windows now.
