personally i would backup all the important stuff and just do a fresh install of his OS.

Can you boot into BIOS or watch carefully how the laptop boots, there might be an option to do a restore from a 'hidden' partition

If there is it will reset the laptop as if it was just bought, assuming somebody hasn't deleted the hidden partition, I had to reinstall win7 complete on a laptop that somebody had helpfully deleted the restore partion, so instead of 30 minutes it took me about a day to do it

Also, as a fix that may save much time later try this :

Emsisoft Free Emergency Kit: portable malware scanner | Free removal of Viruses, Bots, Spyware, Keyloggers and Trojans

Very good anti-malware that removes dodgy cookies and malware that may be screwing with your system. Also have a look at the portable version of CCleaner that is very very good at removing unwanted crap from your system. If you have never used it, it may take 2-3 runs to clear the dead wood out of the registry and systen. You will be amazed just how much crap is left in the registry be so called uninstallers

It won't remove anything it shouldn't unlike some registry scannesr I had used in the past that really screwed up, CCleaner has never messed up, and I have been using it for 2-3 years

CCleaner - Builds

The portable version will quite happily run from USB stick with no issues

dose Emsisoft Free work on windows 7??

Emsisoft Anti-Malware runs on Windows XP, Vista (incl. x64) and 7 (incl. x64). Emsisoft Anti-Malware is full x64 compatible since version 5.0.

i always do that :) personally i find all the trial software and rubbish that nobody wants verging on malware...however i always do a drive image or ghost image when i have the basics done.
