can i link my laptop and desktop together using just a network card in each and one cable? i heard u just crimp the wires in the rj-45 differently. would i need any special software as well?

Hi M8...Yep, basically that's right..On the cable front, what you need is a 'cross-over' cable, available from Maplin's etc or your local computer shop.....
You don't need any extra software, I pressume your running win9x?(or a Mac..?) It will do it all for you...(well more or less...). You'll need to share your drives and set-up a name for each PC, but it's all straight forward.....Have fun

aswell as that you'll need to assign each machine an IP address if your going to use IP, or make sure both machines are running the Netbeui protocol, other wise you can connect them up but they won't see each other!!

if you new to networking and only plan to have 2 machines linked then use netbuei there is no setup and much faster than tcp/ip
if you plan to play games then u will probably need to use tcp/ip but for file copying/printer sharing etc use netbui.
you can have both installed at same time.

To make acrossover lead
1st rj45 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
2nd rj45 3 6 1 4 5 2 7 8
use netbuei its straight forward
