my freind has asked me to find him a decent lcd tv for £500 - £600
it doesn't matter if it has freeview or not but he would like a warranty with it. I'm trying to find the best possible one at 32" or 37"

I have had a look around and at some of the tvs in the bargain basement section. Heres some of the best ones I have found:

32 inch Samsung with 1 yr warranty
http://www.247electrical.co.uk/epages/twentyfourseven.storefront/EN/Product/SAMLE32R87BDX?SOURCE=AW
this has a 8000:1 contrast ratio but only 450 cd/m2 on brightness, (1) is this good or bad due to brightness?

Arianet HQ 37'' Widescreen LCD TV HD with 2 year warranty
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Disp...HQ+37''+Widescreen+LCD+TV+HD+?productId=25685
contrast: 1200:1, and brightness: 500 cd/m² this seems quite good as its got higher brightness and bigger screen but only has 1200:1 on contrast (2) will the picture quality suffer much due to contrast?

32 inch samsung
http://www.beyondtelevision.co.uk/thisProduct.asp?ID=878
once again has 8000:1 contrast ratio but doesnt say the brightness or warranty, (3) do samsung provide the warranty for new tvs or is it the company selling them?

I found a nice cheap 42" philips plasma but was over budget a little thats here:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...u=439553&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null
has nice contrast at 10,000 its really appealing

Right well I was wondering if you guys have any views on them and if anyone has any better offers. I appreciate it if any of my questions above get answered aswell as i'm unsure how the brightnuss and contrast contribute to each other and which is the most important.

Thanx in advance,

Chris.

If he/she was my friend I would advice to wait till the budget was higher, then get the biggest screen that he/she could watch in the room, and try to get a set with all the bells and whistles ie freeview and most important one from the big manufactures

TVs from John Lewis come with a free 5 year guarantee + delivery.

Read 'free' as built into the price. However, they are not that much more than highstreet prices which you'd end up paying £100's more for a 5 yr extended warranty (if bought from the store that sold you the TV) plus your delivery on top.

John Lewis discount offers: http://www.pricedash.com/DiscountCodes.aspx?R=John+Lewis, follow the link to save £10 on purchases over £100 (new customers I think).

check out www.ebuyer.com too. They do free delivery over a certain amount (below what you stated anyway) plus if they want to buy over their budget they can take out interest free finance over 9 months with Edge that gives instant agreement at time of check out. Just fill in some paperwork they email you and send it back from what I can tell.

Worth a look for them...

thanx guys, I have managed to get him to push his budget and am advising this 42" hd ready philips plasma here:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...sku=439553&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&tabIndex=1

comes with freeview,
hd ready,
has contrast of 10,000:1,
14oo cd/m2 brightness,
virtual dolby sorround sound,
resolution xga 1080 x 1024
response time of 3ms

with a price of £685.90 its truly the best I have seen so far, its a high named brand and has a manufacturers 1 yr warranty with it. The only thing it lacks is the fact it does not have a pc input of vga or dvi but can always use the hdmi with a converter instead.
I truly believe this is the one, what do you guys think?
