Gez, you'll have to gives us a report back on how it all goes, my son and I intend to have a road trip out that way next year (Auschwitz will be one of our stops to pay respects and to just ponder about how and why such evil can be inflicted upon a fellow human being.)
Won't be going to auschwitz family was there during ww2. Let u know about salt mines etc

The person I was telling you about @gez, says she has been a couple of times, and did the Auschwitz Museum tour. She said it was really good and informative. However she said they really went for the night life and spent most of the time on a pub crawl. She said it's a great place.

My own "interest" in Auschwitz came about because I knew two separate people who had survived Auschwitz.
The first was a lady named Zeph who worked with my mother, she and her sister had been in Dachau and were then sent to Auschwitz.
The second was a man named Vic who I worked with for several years (I had gone to school with his 2 daughters and later worked with his son).
He had spent time in several Labour Camps before being sent to Auschwitz.
People automatically Auschwitz a Concentration Camp; when in fact it was a "dual" camp, it was a Concentration Camp but it was also an Extermination Camp.
There were actually 3 types of Camps ::
1) Labour Camps, as it's title suggests they were Camps for those used for enforced Labour, such as building underground factories or military bases and working in German factories, particularly if they had certain skills.
2) Concentration Camps, derived their name from the fact that people were "concentrated" and imprisoned without trial and were kept in extremely harsh conditions.
3) Extermination Camps, again the title explains the purpose of the camp.
Extermination Camps were established to carry out the "Final Solution" of wiping out all Jewish people and those considered Enemies of the State.
There were 6 Extermination Camps in Poland, CHELMNO, BELZEC, SOBIBOR, TREBLINKA, MAJDANEK and AUSCHWITZ - BIRKENAU.
These camps were equipped with Gas Chambers and Crematories to carry out mass extermination.

Easy to walk round, goto main square its really nice.a walk along the river is good , also try day or night cruise. We walked around all day and ended up 66 minutes from hotel , knackered so ubered back 20 zlory (£5).
Didn't get to salt mine ,to much for wife but gather a great place to go.
Not tried trams but they are bloody fast.
Airport transfer was quoted £100 return but went with hopper (Uber) £35 return.

Back home now, really enjoyed Krakow, here's the apartment we stayed in, very comfortable and convenient for the centre.
