Jaguar Land Rover to close factory

The firm said it will decide next year whether to shut its site at Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands, which makes Jaguars, or its site at Solihull, which makes Range Rovers.

The company said there will be no compulsory redundancies involved in the closure.

Bosses added that up to 800 new jobs are to be created at Halewood on Merseyside because of a decision to build a new Range Rover.

The firm, owned by Indian giant Tata, employs around 5,000 workers in Solihull, 2,000 in Castle Bromwich and 1,800 at Halewood.

Jaguar Land Rover gave details of a new business plan it said was designed to increase its global competitiveness and respond to the challenges of climate change.

If it weren't for the Land Rover brand, Jaguar would be finished. Tata were forced into taking over Jaguar if they were to land the hugely profitable Land Rover.

Most of the recent Range Rovers are very average compared to the BMW built ones between 2003-2005. The chavvy Range Rover Sports are awful and have really diluted the prestigious brand. I understand the need for the crappy Sport model as it's cheap, nasty and affordable to all but this is miles from the luxury brand which Range Rover owners should be buying into. The full fat owners are pissed off and have moved over to other brands, something which could hurt Tata in the long run.
