How to find TFTP Server IP addresss without an existing connection

Hi,
Just wandering if anyone knew a way of:

1. finding the TFTP Ip adress when there isn't an existing connection.?
2. Is it absolutely necessary to put in the TFTP addy when configuring a modem?
3. Any very easy ways of testing a cable inside a property to check whether its still live or not before spending hours trying to get a modem working on it?

u dont need a tftp server to get on if u ur hyperterminal to written ur settings u only need it if u want to use configurator or ambit tool or if u want to force a 10mb config file on the modem
