My dad has just bought a 3GS, when he turns the phone on and connects to Itunes he gets a message saying " There is no sim card installed in the Iphone you are trying to activate, please disconnect and insert sim card"

Is there a way of seeing what software the phone has already installed??

Silly question, but has he installed a SIM Card? Normally iTunes will need to activate the phone in order for you to get access.

the network its on is O2, my dads on T-mobile, will it activate with T-mobile sim even if it's locked??

No, the phone is locked to O2. You can call O2 and have it unlocked, but I'm sure its only if you have a contract/PAYG sim with them (takes up to 14 days)

And that depends on the phones baseband as only specific ones are supported with UltraSnow

You might have to create a custom 5.0.1 IPSW in snowbreeze so you can hacktivate it (i don't think redsnow hacktivates)

hello i heard theres a way to unlock your iphone with an unactive sim that you can get from any network carrier, does anyone know if this can acuattly work?

Just borrow a sim from someone on O2? simple enough, plug it into itunes and it will activate. once activated check the software and then give the person their sim card back.
