Hard drives

I am sorry if this has been asked but I have been away and I am kind of on a time limit here so searching for ages isn't an option.
If I remove my 40gb seagate hdd (standard issue) from my sky+ box can I just plug in a new one.Do i have to format or anything or is it just a case of plug it in and play.
