Hi I'm currently using a 16gb Sandisk usb stick for epg and record but want to start using an external hard drive, question is does it have to be one with an external power supply, I already have a 500gb hdd but without the power supply.

Try it mate some some work some dont it depend on the power consumption and if the solo can supply that via the usb port.

No mate if it keeps unmounting its a sign its no got enough juice to work. You could simply power it from a powered usb hub then it will work regardless.
