No, i have installed office pro 2007 and its fine and stuck xp-sp3 in an old cluncker i had lying about and both are fine..

Can someone explain how this is possible?

I've just downloaded my first ever legitimate copy of Windows, lol, completely free and I have a CD Key, how can this be?

Basically the EULA on these licences are for testing/evaluation only. Obviously if you were to download whatever you wanted and use it at home instead of buying the software you would break EULA. But who is going to stop you? The keys last forever even when your sub runs out you just can't request anymore.
