Three children and two adults were killed in a car that burst into flames after a crash in tailbacks on the M6 motorway.

The young children had been travelling with two adults - thought to be their parents - in Cheshire.

Their car was involved in a crash involving three lorries and two cars in queues caused by an earlier crash in which a van driver died.

The car carrying the children burst into flames on the north-bound carriageway between junction 16 at Barthomley and junction 17 for Sandbach at about 10.40pm last night.

A foreign lorry driver, believed to be Spanish and in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A police spokeswoman said: "Upon impact, one of the cars ignited and is very badly burnt.

"From that vehicle police believe they have recovered what appears to be five bodies. These are thought to be two adults and three young children."

The earlier crash happened just before 9pm and involved a white van which hit a bridge parapet.

The driver, a man in his 30s, died in the crash, which happened between junctions 17 and 18.

The M6 reopened at about 7.20 am after emergency resurfacing work.

Commenting on the second crash, Superintendent Jed Manley, of Cheshire Police, said in a GMTV interview: "The collision involved three heavy goods vehicles and two other cars. As a result of the collision one of the cars tragically caught fire and all the occupants of that vehicle were killed.

"We do not know whether the occupants of the vehicle are related. I can confirm that one of the heavy goods vehicle drivers was arrested at the scene.

"He is a Spanish national in his mid 40s and he is currently at the local police station."

There was another crash at 5am today when a car travelling north on the M6 crossed the central reservation and hit a van heading south, a spokesman for the Highways Agency said.

Nobody is thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

He said the motorway would remain closed between junctions 15 and 14 until the vehicles are recovered.

Six dead in series of M6 motorway crashes

The incident brings the death toll on Britain's roads last night to nine, following an separate accident in Derbyshire.

The children were travelling with two adults, thought to be their parents, when their car burst into flames following a five-vehicle collision on a stretch of the motorway in Cheshire.

The victims all died at the scene of the accident.

A 46-year-old Spanish lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A police spokeswoman confirmed he would be questioned through an interpreter.

The spokeswoman also confirmed the five casualties had been in the same car.

She said the vehicle "suffered extensive fire damage when it ignited upon impact."

The collision, involving three lorries and two cars, happened on the northbound carriageway between junction 16 at Barthomley and junction 17 at Sandbach at about 10:40pm on Monday night.

The tragedy followed a fatal crash one junction further along the same section of motorway around an hour-and-a-half earlier, which had caused tailbacks.

A motorist from Cheshire in his 30s, driving a white van, died after hitting a bridge parapet.

It is thought the later incident happened because of heavy, slow traffic caused by the first accident which took place between Junction 17 and Junction 18 at Holmes Chapel.

Speaking about the second incident, Superintendent Jed Manley, of Cheshire Police, told GMTV: "The collision involved three heavy goods vehicles and two other cars - as a result of the collision one of the cars tragically caught fire and all the occupants of that vehicle were killed.

"We do not know whether the occupants of the vehicle are related. I can confirm that one of the heavy goods vehicle drivers was arrested at the scene.

"He is a Spanish national in his mid 40s and he is currently at the local police station."

One motorist, Aidan O'Rourke, from Manchester, said he had waited nearly three hours to pass the incident.

He told the BBC: "Passing the accident scene I saw several lorries had been damaged, the cab of one was completely smashed."

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said there was a third crash at 5am Tuesday morning when a car travelling north on the M6 crossed the central reservation and hit a van heading south, although nobody is thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

He said the motorway would remain closed between junctions 15 and 14 until the vehicles were recovered.

Traffic is now flowing northbound on the motorway around Junctions 16 and 17, albeit with more congestion than usual.

Police had earlier advised motorists to either find an alternative route or delay their journey if possible.

Emergency resurfacing work was carried out after the two fatal crashes.

In an unrelated incident, three people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed in a collision in Derbyshire.

A Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Passat collided on the A52. Two men in the Corsa were pronounced dead at the scene, near Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, while the girl, a rear seat passenger in the Passat, was pronounced dead at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

The woman driving the Passat was in hospital being treated for serious injuries, while a six-year-old child also in the Volkswagen was being treated for less serious injuries.

20mnths old and 10 WEEKS old, For fucks sake, when are our roads and motorways going to be regulated properly.
That bastard Portugese driver should be thrown in jail for life...an eye for an eye. He killed them,he serves the punishment. But not with our joke of a law system...he'll be free to go home on some technicality!
Disgrace!

What a very strange comment.
You know nothing of the incident but already have the poor man hung drawn and quartered. It's probably standard practice in serious traffic incidents for people to be arrested if there is any kind of suspicion of fault.

I think this was a family Llandudno, a great shame.

is all very sad. just goes to show how fragile life is. one min your going about your daily life an next, its all gone. we all need to be more caring kind and loving to one an other dunno how long wer'e here for ....... oooh feel a group hug comming on hahahah . seriously tho, its very sad indeed. rest peacefully that poor family xx

A Portuguese lorry driver has been charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving after a family was killed on the M6 motorway.

Chef David Statham, 38, wife Michelle, 33, and children Reece, 13, Jay, nine, Mason, 20 months, and 10-week-old Ellouise died in Cheshire on Monday.

The six, from Llandudno, had visited family in Birmingham before the crash involving three lorries and two cars.

Paulo Jorge Nogueira da Silva, 46, was charged by Cheshire Police on Thursday.

The family were killed between junctions 16 and 17 of the northbound M6.

'Childhood sweethearts'

Mr Da Silva, of Calle Romero, Tutana, Murcia, in Spain, is due to appear before magistrates in Crewe later.

Police confirmed he is Portuguese but was living in Spain.

Mr Statham worked as a chef at St David's College in Llandudno.

Mrs Statham's family said she and her husband were childhood sweethearts who had been together for 19 years.

Tributes poured in for the family, who moved to North Wales from Birmingham four years ago, after news of the crash broke.

The Mayor of Llandudno said a memorial service would be held for them if that was what relatives wanted.

The northbound stretch of the M6 between junctions 16, at Stoke-on-Trent, and 17, for Sandbach, was closed for several hours after the incident.

Well in light of todays news I think you may be better to re-think your statement!

That 'poor man' as you put it has now been charged with the deaths of 6 people.

Lets not have a slanging match m8. Just think about the poor people killed in this awful tragedy.
If you want to have a rant (which you are entitled to do) then start a new thread in the rant room .

Not interested in a slanging mate, far from it. Just didn't think that someone who kills 6 people justified having a tag of 'poor man' whether he'd been charged or not.

we need to fook these left hand drive trucks of the road there over here nickin our truckers jobs and using the fuel from over there and no haulage tax ..

I stand by my statement because I was right at the time I made it. The person who made the original statement would be entitled to make it now, but not before the latest evidence.
