External HDD not recognised

i have an external hdd, usb powered running vista and it is not being recognised. it was working in the moring tried it now and nothing shows up in my computer. checked in disk management nothing there as well. the hdd led light is flashing and i hear the hdd whirring but the laptop does not recgonose it. any ideas. i have alot of data on there which is not backed up in anoher location need advice asap

i have opened the externall hdd up and it looks like one of pins of the hdd has come off and stuck into the connector of the hDD. i have managed to transfer my info but is the hdd dead or can it still be used.

Are you sure you did not damage the pin in opening up the drive ? Normally you need to give sufficient power to run these drives.

Find out what pin number is broken. Might still be okay to use.
