THE price of a fish supper is set to rise by up to 50 per cent, the fishing industry has warned.

The soaring cost of diesel is to blame as trawlermen pass the hike on to consumers.

A report by the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) found marine diesel has almost doubled in price from 31p to 60p a litre in the last year.

With further fuel price rises on the cards, Seafish reckon the cost of a fish supper will rocket from s5 to s7.50 by the end of 2009.

And it's not just fish suppers - all locally caught fish and shellfish will go up in price again.

Philip MacMullen, head of environment at Seafish, said: "Consumers must be prepared for significant increases in the cost of seafood."

And he warned that with crude oil prices soaring, fishermen will go bust.

He said: "It's also likely that if current trends continue we will see fishing decrease overall and, possibly, the number of boats fishing in UK waters decline."

Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, agreed and added: "We are utterly dependent on fuel - no fuel, no fish.

"Over the last 10 years, fuel prices have been ramped up slowly but it has now got to an uncomfortable level and is threatening the viability of the sector.

"If everything is left to its own devices, then supply will decrease as boats can't afford to go to sea."

The National Federation of Fish Friers also painted a bleak picture.

President David Audley said: "One of the advantages we have had is that when restaurant prices rise, fish and chips were a cheap alternative."

I cant believe how much this world relies on oil...

Its a pure evil substance.. this black substance is going to cause some heart ache...

well they can put up if they like they end up bust no one will buy 50% up when you think of it thats fooking mad whats next chips well i love the odd bag but if its like that currys all the way lol

surely if they use the oil from the fish fryer to run the boats everyones happy - apart from the fish obviously lol

go back to sails and blokes with pointy sticks - much more sporting - and if you go for really big fish then you can help keep sealevel down lol

thats not as daft as you think it might be.

The Royal Navy is considering using waste cooking oil in its warships - if they can keep it warm enough in the tanks.

It would be poetic should the fishing industry use waste oil from the chippie to go fishing with...

fok them dont buy then they wont have to catch as much and charge u as much this is what we all need to do is tell the all to fook off

this is all part of my master plan to make prawns illegal

prawns are brilliant mate!

why dont the trawlers use waste oil from chippies? it suits them both ie chippies get rid of their waste oil and trawlers dont have to shell out for fuel everyones a winner

I have no idea what sort of engines the trawlers use. However, fuel derived from waste cooking oil has the tendency to either go bad or to solidify in the engine.

If it goes bad it wont run, if it goes all goey the engine is knackered. I guess as soon as these things can be sorted then boats may start to use it.

prawns are the sickest little pink fookers in the universe m8, ewwww the thought of them makes me want to spew lol, i think id rather have toe nail fried rice than prawns lol

We rely upon oil because it helps us.

Oil is not evil, humans can be.

Just off to bathe my balls in a barrel of crude oil.

Mmmmmm, sticky dinosaur bone juice.

1 (one) barrel of oil is aledgedly equivalent to 25,000 man hours of labour - so for every barrel you dont use we can keep an unemployed person in work for 2 years - or looking at it another way you could employ them for 3.3 days for the cost of a litre - so the current price of under £1.30 a litre is a bargain - now you just need to teach the lazy little git to run at 70 mile an hour whilst pushing your 4x4 and your laughin

oil - it's soooooooooo cheap we could afford to end slavery!!!
