hello,
Can an ISP setup anything to deliberetly slow your connection?
i have a great connect 50.667 but lately my connection is slowing to a halt on browsing, i have cleaned out the usaul, pc and even tried 2 pc's on the line, all seems to point to my isp being akward as lately i complained about my ports being scanned.
need to find out why, either my modem is sending errors ( and having to resend or summit)or i need a new isp,
i am trying to borrow another modem just incase.
hence the question, can they deliberately slow my connection.
cheers

Hawkeye

Hi Hawkeye

Ive been having the same problem as you over the past 2 months now. I also tried every thing with the computer, I even went as far as reformatting my hard drive, but i still got the slow connection problems.

Anyway i'm with Freeserve and they seem to be getting slower all the time.

I'll be finding another server soon so heres hoping.

Up until just the other week I was running along fine. I am with Shitserve - sorry I mean Freeserve. At one point I wasnt recieving any packets at all re-connected and all was well again. To be honest with you I think they are fannying around with things back at the ranch..!! They are all going to the wall anyway.

I used to be with Freeserve (eve & weekend access) and had no probs. Recently upgraded to their Anytime package and since then everything's got really slow. Thought about ringing Freeserve but is it worth paying 50p a min for their help?

I am with NTL and like all of you have been experiencing slow connections, I have re-formatted, tried new modems ect.. but no joy. I am a high user and believe I am being targeted for this reason. After a certain time at night, around 10:30 I cannot connected at all and nothing has been changed at my end.

Yesterday I re-formatted a m8s pc re installed everything, he too is with NTL. Set up his account and guess what a connection speed of 50,600 where the best I can get now is 36,000, In the beginning I to used to get this speed but not now.

Can they do this ?

I was a techie for freeserve......twas me you'd pay 50p a min to talk to!!!!!!

Anytime will be slow, cos they have more subscribers than they can cope with. There expanding the network, so sooner or later it will work, but I just stuck with my original ISP!!

Gazza have you got a letter yet from NTL about a rise in your monthly cost. I have not but my m8 has. Whats it all about ?

Know it's a dated reply but...

I've been with Freeserve for a few years and more recently 'Anytime' but a few months ago I couldn't connect above 38666 but now for some reason I get 48000

Don't know if Freeserve changed their config or it's the fact I'm using a different OS but I now can't connect with Mcafee Firewall stealthing my ports ?

LMFAO ROFL i bet i have had a few chats with u steve lol i bloody had some problems with freeserve... first of all i find that for about 3 months there service is fine then all of a sudden the bloody thing wont connect right it connects for 10 seconds then drops the line ???? then (thats right) i have to phone them for 50p a min for bloody like 5 - 10 mins and then i get of the phone and wondered why i bothered

lol the worst thing about freeserve and i done my nut over this is they always say its a BT fault then i ring BT about my line they check it and they say its fine ???? ring freeserve back and they say that its still a BT Fault ???? how on earth can this be when BT have been out to check it ???.

so now after the row of the century i dont have any probs with them (touch wood)

oooo look i got 45333bits per second lmao its normally 44K

I'm on broadband with NTL and the download speed is excellent. However they DO cap the upload speed to 14kps for home users only. The technology to stop this is available to them but they're not planning on releasing it to the general public as yet.
I'm sure this won't help the regular modem users but anyone on broadband wondering why they can download at up to 100 yet struggle to upload now knows the reason why!

Slowing connections is very easy for an ISP alsmost every commercial Proxy access system has a selctive bandwidth throttling capacity, which can limit any connection in any direction to a specified transfer speed.
However chances are its just ISPs being greedy and oversubscribing their networks.
