Blue light around drive on whilst on standby?

Got a Wii today. Is the blue lighting which surrounds the drive supposed to start dim, go bright and flash whilst on standby?
It's annoying if that's the case!

Faulty or is there a way to stop it doing this without unplugging completely?

You can alter what the light does in the system settings. I personally have turned it off cos it is annoying

If the light is on while in standby, it means you've got a new message waiting to be read.
