i have a compaq laptop when i first got it i set the bios password to something that i have now forgot now i cant get the bloody thing to let me in is there a way round the bios password if so please TELL ME thx

Take the batery out of the motherboard for a couple of minutes, this will reset the password, then put the battery back in and you can acess the bios with no problem.

I doubt very much that disconecting the battery for just a few minutes will work. I have known the BIOS to remain as is for up to 3 months with battery out. You need to short the jumpers on the CMOS. If you have manual then you should have no probs. Otherwise let me know what board u got

Our Compaq desktop computers (Compaq Deskpro EN's) have a jumper on the motherboard to blank out the CMOS including the BIOS password.

We recently had this problem on a notebook, and we couldn't find a way into the BIOS at all, including removing the battery - in the end it was an engineer call-out.

I hope you don't have to resort to this.

If all else fails and you cannot find the correct jumper, remove the battery and only if you feel confident short out the battery connection terminals on the motherboard, this should discharge the capacitors ( same as jumper short).

why not use the program that im gunna upload now for finding those forgotten passwords
handy lil program

so go check the download section

within the last couple of days i have had the same problem with a compaq armada until i disconncted the bios battery, removed the main battery and left it overnigt. it really does work.

You lads are not hearing me correctly. You cannot gain access to the cmos through the bios. It has to be done manually before boot.

as i said in my reply, remove the main battery and disconnect the bios battery. leave it out for at least 24hrs and it WILL work m8.

sorry for not getting back to you all a lot sooner i will try a few of your suggestions mentioned and get back asap thanks all.

what does the battery for bios look like ive been in and had a look there is nothing in there that resembles a battery Help I do need my laptop i cant run any programmes on it because when i first got it i stoped it from checking floppy drive and cd drive to make the boot up quicker and now explorer has caused an error thus rendering my laptop useless a the moment all help is much appriceated

It might resemble a small metal disc around 12 to 20 mm in diameter held onto the MB by a socket with a springy metal strip on top to to keep it in (Or a socket with little claws like a Tiffany setting lol). Or it could be soldered onto the MB which poses a few more problems often with a coloured heat-shrink jacket on and possibly polarity markings.

If it's an award bios there are a couple of universal passwords that will work every time.

Try

shift+s y x z

There's another one but I can't remember it, I have it writte down somewhere and as soon as I find it I'll post it up here for ya.

If there is a problem booting it up then surely (if it is running windows) you can press the F8 key continuously until it bbot into the service menu where you can select a safe mode boot, which once initialised you can then choose start, run and in the dialog box type "sfc" which will check for any damaged or missind system files and replace them, you may then use the program in windows to get your bios password. Hope this helps Billy
