Anyway to change the region of a wii

As per title. My mate has an old Jap wii console (Bought in the 1st wave of wii console a few years back) I/he wants to know is there any way of changing the region to Uk/Pal - Also Is the process for soft-modding the same as it would be with any other wii. Lastly I haven't looked at it yet but I don't think it's ever been on-line and hasn't been played for over a year so therefore most likely has an older version firmware on it - Is it worth changing/upgrading the firmware before i start doing any modding ?

i dont know about changing firm ware of the wii to uk for good as it might brick it ,but i have a uk wii softmodded and i can play uk, usa & jap games on mine so it's region free if softmodded, but is still a uk wii .hope this helps
