I have a technomate 5402 at the moment and thinking of buying the alien 2? would people recommend it or not?

pro's and con's of every receiver and the only reason these get a look in IMHO is because you can get a twin tuner for less than £150 but i would highly recommend a proper mispel based enigma2 box rather than one of these so called dual boot devices that will not run every plugin.

thank you for the quick response

which box would you be speaking of then as a better alternative to something like the Alien 2

If your looking for a Twin tuner Mispel based Linus receiver ten i would say the TM-2T-OE is probably the best bet and will run i would say 99% of the Enigma2 plugins available today.

Or if your on a budget VU DUO Clone at around 160 delivered. Still the best value and price/performance for a twin tuner E2 box. I ahve had my Duo V2 clone for a long time now and it's still going strong.
I believe a TM TWIN OE comes in at around 220.

The Amiko Alien 2 / Golden Media Triplex is a decent buy .
I bought mine for 155 euro .
It boots very quickly ,much faster than my Dm800 .
I'm using the HDMU image and it is fairly good but it still has a few quirks.
The remote control response was a bit poor but that has been fixed ,its very smooth now.
Crossepg ,Cool epg,1 channel, youtube player ,icefilms ,autobouquets and rte player all work well .
It has a very good media portal plugin that has alot of online feeds .

The SD picture quality on these boxes is much better than any Vu or Dreambox box I have had.
The HD picture is ok .

The boxes are very finicky with usb drives, sometimes they work other times they dont ,Kingston are the best.
It has a DVB-T/T2 tuner built in too so handy for Saorview/Freeview,no need for a usb tuner .

There seems to be a campaign to discredit these receivers as if they are junk ,they arent ,they are good ,its just the software isnt as polished as a Vu+/Dreambox but they are still stable and whilst they dont run every plugin ,they run most of the important ones.

I dont think there's a campaign to discredit these boxes.. But they do need to be put into context. At the end of the day they are bargain basement recievers built by Fulan.
They do not have as good spec hardware, software or support as any of the DM or VU recievers. They are also not natively designed to run E2 images.. Anything not running on Broadcom CPU's and Chipsets hasnt really been able to properly run E2 images.
These are primarily SPARK recievers. If your buying one of these on the belief that they are as good as a VU or DM E2 reciever then you will be disapointed they are not in that league..

this is all very useful so thank you. the vu duo seems a bit pricey and the reports of poor picture quality are holding me back from investing in one but thanks to you lot I can now see why these boxes are more expensive that the Alien 2 and i think if i ma going to upgrade form non linux then i would want access to all the plugins rather than finding once again im restricted

with the vu duo is channel change speed good ? im assuming it will be

check out the dual tuner nbox..................basic but does its job

I've had my Alien 2 for over 3 months now and have it running very stable on the scooterbuk backup 4.5 from Satstation. Its based on one of the HDMU images has YouTube iplayer 1 channel youporn amongst others.

Enigma 2 on the boxes is pretty decent ,it was poor initially ,dreadful actually ,but it has improved alot in the last few months .
Compared to my Dm800 the Alien 2 is very fast at booting up .
Sure it doesnt run all the plugins you can run on Broadcom chipsets but it runs all of the ones I use bar the Ondemand plugin.
As I have said it runs Coolepg,Crossepg,Youtube,1 channel,Icefilms,RTE Player,TV3 player, multiquickbutton, etc and runs them the same as on my Dm800 .
What more do I need,I have a smart tv .

I paid 155 euro for the box and it is a Triple tuner,a Vu Duo would cost double that .
I needed a twin tuner receiver and I wasnt prepared to pay 300 euro for one or buy a clone .

It has a few bugs ,primarily the audio levels on different channels are different ,which is annoying, its also finnicky with usb drives for backing up files .
If you need a single tuner box get a clone Dm800 ,you cant go wrong but if you need a twin or even triple tuner the Amiko 2 is worth a go.
Be prepared to spend a bit of time setting it up though as the support ,while growing ,isnt as large as the Vu+/Dreambox.
Enigma 2 on these boxes is alot better than some people are saying ,I suspect they are Vu+ fanboys .

grab Automatic Volume Adjustment plugin. works a treat.

thanks Fano. i am totally new to linux boxes and not really wanting to spend over 150 if possible. i want something with more flexibility than the technomate 5402, more features but also less annoying things like motor problems channels sticking if you change mid sat turn etc

i have no knowledge of plugins at this stage so maybe i wont miss some of the plugins that wont work with the box?

does the streaming to PC work well on the amiko alien 2?

it takes a bit of fiddling about with. you can set it on a per channel basis as well

a per channel basis? is it as simple as loading something like VLC player on the PC or can you change channel from the Pc too?

I was talking to Fano

I have it m8 but it doesnt work properly ,audio is still all over the place.
What settings would you recommend ?

My box is setup to AC3 downmix. I stick an SD channel (Mpeg) on and set A2 volume just below half way, then balance the TV audio. Then in plugin I set AC3 to 30 and keep Mpeg at 100 and this keeps volume roughly the same when switching between HD and SD channels. It does depend what's showing though as some channels fook about a bit with broadcasting volume between programmes and adverts - Disney channel comes to mind, and some channels are a law unto themselves. You just have to play about with it a bit to customise it to your needs.

At £150 theres no other non-clone reciever with twin tuner capibility that can run E2 images. In that respect may well be worth a punt. Do these have the capibility to take internal SATA hard disk for PVR and Timeshift ? Or is it external USB only ?
Next time I need a twin tuner reciever I might look into one of these. They are cheaper than a VU DUO clone and can be UK sourced.

You can get the Golden Media Triplex receiver which is exactly the same as the Alien 2 for less than £135 delivered from Germany
Golden Media Spark Triplex 2x DVB-S2 1x DVB-T2 bei Smartcard24

It doesn't take an internal hard drive ,usb drive only, which is a slight drawback.
