Linux All linux ports are ... closed !

I have received a Digiclass M62 from a friend and I try to connect (ftp, Telnet, ...) to it from my PC: connection refused.
I run a tool (nmap,netcat) on my PC to detect open ports on the receiver: answer oif tool is "all ports are closed".
My question: is there a way to open a port on the receiver from "outside" ? What can be done to force port opening ?
Note: connection on RS232 also fails in same manner.

What port range did you run the nmap scan with (I'd advise TCP 1-1024)?

Not being able to connect via the serial port could mean the procedure to activate it isn't correct or possibly faulty hardware.
