Just goes to show though, look out for number 1 and be happy. ;)

That's right.

Just look at the glaring examples of the Sony PSX, PS2 and PSP.

Piracy totally destroyed both systems forcing Sony to abandon the hardware, same as the Xbox360, Microsoft abandoned that 6 months after release due to massive piracy.

Nintendo's Wii lost all developer support once piracy started and now practically no games are released.

If only these systems had never been pirated, perhaps the shops would still be stocking all the latest games for each system, but alas, piracy has killed the market.

Must admit, I haven't been into Gamestation for a long while... but are the shelves really that empty?

That's the thing since the cable hack combined with the internet (I think), hacking anything is no longer esoteric, every tom-cock and bill bong is at it...

No mate, that's my point. :)

Ahhh, sorry, didn't notice you were replying to Raven ... ... ... in a PS3 thread!! Or that everything you said was a pure lie ;) Blond moment!!

I hold a different opinion. I believe it is piracy that makes a console, or at least increases the hardware sales. The DC was dropped due to a massive loss by sega producing the hardware, and was nothing to do with piracy.

PSX/PS2 were massive and sold millions of units, so I dont think that piracy really effected either platform. TBH its due to the PSX and piracy that sony became the dominant market leader.

Wii is just a kids console.

PSP I would have to say has suffered because of piracy, and that saddened me, as its the best handheld gamer bar none. However the DS has not been as affected by piracy, and still outsells most other platforms, but this also could be due to the easyness to pirate and run games on a DS.

Jan, you didn't read my post properly. :)

Do you really believe what I wrote?

Look at some of my points..

Microsoft abandoned the Xbox360 six months after release - false - it's still going strong.
Sony abandoned the PSX and PS2 due to piracy - false - They milked every last drop of life out of both machines.
The Wii has no support due to piracy - false - The Wii probably has more titles released per month than any other console.
Piracy has killed the games market - false - Game sales continue to increase.

I think sarcasm is lost on some people. :D

I totally agree. You can go back even further, Commadore 64 & Spectrum were both heavily pirated consoles, but they didn't do very well ether.

As for "lets all buy the games because we support the developers" is not really the case as, just like the music industry, most of the revenue actually goes to the other companies, like the marketing boys, even the sales outlets don't make a huge profit.

Just like the music industry the artists see the lowest part of the profit. Non of them have ever got rich by sales alone, or gone under because of lack of sales.

PSJailbreak Reverse Engineered!

We took the PSJailbreak dongle out of the drawer again to examine it a bit more in detail. Now we´ll give you a short explanation on the important steps that take place inside of the dongle.

We can confirm that PSJailbreak is in fact no simple clone of Sony´s “Jig” module, instead it´s an honest, self developed exploit. The Chip inside is no PIC18F444 but an ATMega with USB-software. That means that the chip is capable of internal USB emulation. PSJailbreak mainly emulates a 6-port USB-hub to that several USB-devices get connected and disconnected in a specific sequence. One of these devices has the ID of Sony´s “Jig” module, so that means that the “Jig” played a certain role during the development of PSJailbreak.

But first things first: When switching the PS3 on, a device is connected within the USB-emulation, which has a too large configuration descriptor. This discriptor overwrites the stack with contained PowerPC-code that is executed. Now various other devices get connected within the emulation. One device has a 0xAD large descriptor that is part of the exploit and contains static data. Short time later (we´re talking about milliseconds here) the “Jig” gets connected and encrypted data is sent to the “Jig”. An eternity later (in milliseconds that is) the “Jig” answers with 64Bytes of static data, all USB-devices get disconnected, a new device is connected and the PS3 restarts in a new look.

By the way: The PSJailbreak is not update-able. The noted update-feature can, if at all, only be carried out with additional hardware.
