Remember Maggie

Not sure if drunk or being hugely sarcastic?

But if this is a heartfelt post then I'm stunned! Had the country's best interests at heart? Poll Tax?

you've gave me a helluva laugh if nothing else, you won't mind paying for the £10m+ funeral either?

No not a wind up. My opinion.

She was a great woman who stood against Unions and would not allow the them to dictate to her. They wanted more money which the country didn't have so she said 'no' and the Unions did not like it so they took strike action. Effectively closing the mines and leaving themselves jobless.

If you worked for a living she wanted you to be rewarded for hard work. Poll Tax was fairer than the previous rates everyone had to pay.

Poll tax fair
You are really having a laugh now.

The poll tax was flawed from the outset and proved to be flawed when it was uturned. The Scottish had an extra year of it too as Thatcher used us as guinee pigs.

She did one or two things that were good but she also did a lot of harm

I'd rather pay Poll Tax now than Council Tax. A service should cost the same now matter how big your house is. The cost of emptying a bin, is the same as the cost for emptying a bin. (I know it's more detailed than that)

Don't forget the huge debt the country owed before she came in to power and how she reduced it by nearly £50b. The lowest it had been since 1912. Considering now we owe over £1t I doubt we will ever see another leader (Labour or Conservative) willing to stand against the few for the benefit of the many and reduce this.

You still got the Poll Tax - the name changed.

Then was a UK with 27% inflation, 1.5 million unemployed and that was BEFORE Thatcher.

A joke country with the Winter of Discontent, massive rises to those with huge union backing while those who didn't have a huge union behind them just paid. Ridiculous taxes for high earners who simply left the country for a more sensible regime.

Of course, you may prefer France, socialist state with a labour cost three times anywhere else in the World. Hence, a European country that is totally shafted and uncompetitive...?

Remember the poll tax taxed everyone over 16 in the household thats were it was flawed

Why, doesn't everyone over sixteen use services ?

Sorry, your birthday and all ! :)

I realise that you have stated that it's more detailed than that, but realistically the cost of emptying the bins on a council estate with perhaps a thousand homes all in close proximity or the large skip size bin from a multi-storey hi-rise containing maybe 150 flats (so 150 payments for the one skip size bin) are definitely not the same as the cost of collecting the bins from say a large lodge style dwelling based on a private estate with 1 or 2 mile approach road to each property.
All taxes should be collected on a basis of ability to pay.

There lies another point of discontent...............................Not everyone uses the services available, so if you don't use the Library, the Sports Centre, the Swimming Pool, the Centre for Caribbean and African Elders, the Local Museum, the Lesbian and Gay Advisory Service, SkateBoard Park, Meals On Wheels, Centre for Carnival Arts the list goes on and on (I have listed these services not because I don't use them or that I feel they should not exist but because I know that these particular services exist where I live and that they also exist in many other areas).
So if you don't utilise these services should you pay for them ?

Perhaps I should have said everyone uses (or has / will) use some of a range of services. Charging on a basis for each single use is obviously
impractical, but I would make the exception of ballet and opera etc, which seem over supported, in relation to need.

Everyone with income should pay for services, and charges should not be related to property, so "poll tax" in principle, was fair.
The mistake was not charging a percentage of income, as a local service tax, which would have been easier to collect.
The uproar was from people who had previously been freeloading. At the time, I had two working teenage daughters.
My local tax bill was reduced dramatically, so I do admit to a degree of bias ! :)

So by working I pay income tax, by working I am obliged to pay for my prescriptions, rent, council tax and many other things yet those who put nothing into the system are 'ok' to use my taxes to fund their lifestyles?

Apparently, the answer to that question is 'Yes'...?

Our illustrious local leaders make services available according to their particular leaning. A problem with this is they don't ask whether we (as Council Tax payers) want to fund this or whether the group the service is aimed at want the service anyway.

So, in the Lake District there is an initiative to make The Lakes more accessible to ethnic minorities. Now, I don't have problem with that in principle but...

...are we saying that ethnic minorities don't know how walking works or do they not know where The Lakes are? Do they want to walk? Did our illustrious leaders just spend thousands stating the blatantly obvious?

Common Purpose indoctrination is rife in these leftist enclaves.

Some is needed, just gone too far for job creation e.g why do we need all these counselors, coordinators, facilitators etc.
The list seems endless, how did we manage before ?

It's called 'getting on with it' - what people did before 'insecure childhood' and other BS was discovered ;)
