On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse is sweeping across North America, starting in Mexico and travelling across the US and into northeast Canada.

However, the tail end of this most magical of spectacles will be visible in parts of the UK and Ireland, as a partial eclipse sneaks into view.
The start of the partial eclipse is predicted to be at 7.52pm and end at 8.51pm.

Six cities will have particularly good views as the solar eclipse takes place.

While the moon will completely block the sun over the Atlantic, the period of complete darkness will only last a few seconds.

But in the UK, the moon will only partially block out some of the sun.

In Britain, those living in and around Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff will have front-row seats for the phenomenon

You'll need to be on high ground and have clear sky.

"With the partial solar eclipse occurring late in the day UK time, the Sun will be low to the horizon and will actually set before the spectacle is over," BBC Weather presenter Simon King said.

The next partial solar eclipse which will be visible from the UK is expected on 29 March 2025, when 30 to 40% of the Sun's rays are expected to be blocked.

But the next full solar eclipse in the UK isn't expected until 23 September 2090, according to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
