Viper m8....yes you can, I run XP pro on one of my machines that's only a Piii 450 with 256mB Ram, although from what I read some more RAM may be a good idea.
Is your system clean? Or do you already have an OS?
If it's clean, set the BIOS to boot from CDRom, put the XP disk in and follow the instructions. It's quite straight forward, it will lead you through, the only decision to make really is weather you want FAT32 or NTFS.
If you've already got an OS installed, do you want to upgrade your existing OS? Or have two OS's 'dual-boot'? Again, it's insert the CDrom, boot and follow instructions..
let me know if you want more info ...have fun

lone gunman, i tried installing win xp over win 98. installed fine untill it came to getting online then my modem would not dial, aol told me i needed to update modem drivers, how do you do that????.have not got a clue sorry to be a pain. using a celeron chip,56k modem

Right..I'm back!!
Viper first, do you want to keep your Win98? Only really suggest if you've got stuff that will only run on Win9x/ME....and are serious about 'older' windows based games. Do you have one hard disk? Perhaps your best bet will be to 'upgrade' your win98 to XP.
NTFS, NT File System, is a file system (means of storing data on a hard disk)that Win XP uses and before it Win2000 and WinNT. It is superior, bit complicated to go into here, to FAT32. But XP can deal with either system.
If you don't have any data you want to keep on your drive at the moment (highly unlikely...!!!) then a clean install would be best, but in your case, easier option may well be to 'upgrade'. One further thing, before you do so, see if you can track down and save updated XP drivers for your hardware, although the ones in XP will most likely serve you well...but just to be on safe side....
Have Fun and as ever any further questions, just ask.
Now, Millers, so you 'upgraded' your Win98 to XP? You use AOL? And your modem is? what 56K..need to know a bit more about it.. Go start, My Computer, right click, properties, Hardware, Device Manager, have you got a modem listed? If so click the plus and see what details it gives you? I am very suprised that it doesn't work...I thought XP had nearly all modems covered! Let me know what you've got and we'll go from there....

Have Fun
Phhheeww...what a marathon!

If it is like my edition of XP PRO...Free Then it would be a good idea not to let it dial up to register Unless you do have an original of course
