CD & DVD why do some avi fies play on my portable cd player and some dont

ive been downloading some old films via freemake and converting them to avi files. when i attempt to play them so do ok and other say does not support this.what am i doing wrong pse.sorry read dvd player

i use that, after the first few converts i've never checked them since on my standalone dvd.
I think the reason some won't play is that dvd players will only play certain standard picture dimensions like 624x352, 640x360 etc
so if you've customed these settings it could be this

some players refuse to play if encoded with QPEL, run the avi's that don't play through G-spot to check this, can be easily removed with VirualDub.
