Virgin Media customers on 50Mbps plans are in line to get 120Mbps at no extra charge, the company revealed after mistakenly sending upgrade emails to some of its cable broadband subscribers.

Last week, the ISP announced it will increase headline speeds across all its packages, with the top-tier plan going from 100Mbps to 120Mbps, and other plans doubling in speed. On Monday, Virgin Media confirmed it had incorrectly sent an email to some customers across all its tariffs, saying they would be upgraded to 120Mbps once an infrastructure upgrade had been completed.

"Our first email, intended for our 100Mb customers, was accidentally sent to some customers on other tiers which may have led to some confusion. We're sorry for any misunderstanding and will be writing to customers again soon to clarify how the upgrade will affect them," a Virgin Media spokesman said.

"In the meantime, as part of our double-speed programme, we are delighted to confirm that 50Mb customers will actually be upgraded to 120Mb," he added. Previously, the company had said people on the 50Mbps plan would move to 100Mbps.

The price of the 120Mbps package will stay the same for current 50Mbps subscribers, while those on 100Mbps packages will see their cost drop to the 50Mbps level — £35 per month if taken without a Virgin phone line, or £25 with a phone line.

Some 50Mbps customers may initially see a speed increase to 100Mbps before the 120Mbps tier has been provisioned in their area, Virgin Media said. The upgrades are scheduled to begin rolling out in February and should to be completed by mid-2013, it added.

In September, BT introduced plans to "roughly double" the speed of its 40Mbps fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) service to around 80Mbps. In addition, it said it will use fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology to deliver speeds of up to 300Mbps to some customers during 2012, but did not say exactly when these services will be launched.

Question there though is jumping from 50 to 120, does that mean more stringent caps....(not that I have VM)

I recieved the email and then recieved another saying it was a mistake but what annoys me is those already on 100mb will get a price reduction, but those only on 50 wont but its the same tier the only reason 50mb customers arent getting 100 is because it isnt enabled in their area not because 100 costs more so it seems strange to me.

The only cap on 50mb pack is upload limit and I believe that is being double to bring it in line with 100mb.

packet shaping for P2P and newsgroups still applies

I got the same e-mail. but I don't see what you are saying. By the end of the upgrade there will be only one top package and that will 120mb and cost £25 (with phone line)

I was the same and believe this is why they are doing it. I guess a few people would of phoned up and complained and asked if they were getting a reduction in price on their 50MB package as the people on 100MB were getting a reduction. I myself would prefer the reduction in price.

This is what i get connected to the router by ethernet cable and nothing else on

you can get a drop in price, drop to the new 60mb service. It would be quicker then what you have today but there will be quotas.

What I'm saying is 100mb and 50mb are the same xxl tier and same price but only a few areas are already 100mb enabled so most people only get 50mb but after this upgrade all areas will be able to get 120mb but those who already have 100mb are getting a price reduction so they'll be paying less than those on 50 even though they were both paying the same to begin with as it's the same tier. Hope this makes sense lol

people on 100mb pay more than people on 50mb ,im a 100mb customer from day 1 i pay £48 a month just for the internet ,then phone and tv charges on top . 50 mb customers dont pay £48 a month , also we will be getting the bum deal at a guess .on 100mb there is no quotas ,or packet shaping or peak/unpeak times just 100mb all day all night wether you down load a gb or 100 gb of data a day.

they ought to be rolling either 150 or 200mb connections out and if they do i will pay the extra to move to the top tier again .

we pay the extra for the extra speed etc .

100mb and 50mb are not the same price. 50mb is £25, 100mb is £35. I can't see a senario where 100mb will be cheaper then 50mb ?

100mb is rolled out to most areas now, the latest schedule is here,

it doesn't matter the overall speed
it's how your data allowance is managed
i would rather have 50mb connection all of the time rather than 100mb connection when they say you can have it
i am sure there will be a top tier that is completely free from their traffic policy but it will be expensive!
