video to mp4 converter

hi all just got a kindle fire hd, what would be best program to download to convert my dvds to mp4 so I can put them on,i have tried a couple some don't work and one took 4 hours to do 34%.
any help would be great

freemake video converter has a one pass option which is relatively quick.

CPU makes a big difference to conversion speed.

I found 'handbreak' to be the best around, good cpu usage, many export options and multi platform.

Not a programme I have used before so will give it a try. It is always handy to have back up to your preferred programmes.

hi all I have tried hand break and it is very good takes no time at all to convert

or freemake (as suggested) both work fine for me!
