Video file problems

Been having a few problems just lately watching some downloaded videos. I normally stream them from my pc to an xtreamer which normally plays anything.
Affected videos run very slowly with no sound and are obviously completely unwatchable.
They play perfectly well through windows media player. I know it isn't a problem with the xtreamer as the affected videos play up through usb stick on my Bluray player.

I have checked the format of the film I just tried to stream and it appears to be a normal avi. Jarhead 3 which I downloaded via the newsgroups section.
Anyone experiencing the same problem or have any ideas?

I finally managed to watch the film.
Converted it first to an mkv file which gave me video but no audio, so tried converting it to an avi which gave audio but no video???
Tried again with a different converter software into a divx file and it finally worked. Enjoyed the film too.

Just a workaround though so have to investigate further.
Even tried hooking up an hdmi cable from pc to tv and it was short by about 6"
