ive just fitted a thermal switch to the fan power lead, and screwed it to one of the heatsinks on the PSU, powered up the receiver, and as planned, no fan :)

once this heatsink gets to 50°C (+/- 3°) the fan wil kick in. When it cools to ~35°C the fan will shut off

ive taken photos of each step in fitting it, and cos it worked out cheaper, ive bought 20 of the things lol

later tonight ill upload pics, and let you know how its working
 
It works :)

the fan just came on for about 2 mins, then it was on and off for 20-30 seconds at a time, then off for a while :)

i may reverse the polarity of the fan, so instead of it sucking out the hot air in the box, is sucks cool air into the receiver untill its cooled down, see what that runs it like

Beats disconnecting the fan all together like I did lol, will look forward to pics. You are probably better having it blow out other wise your going to end up sucking in dust etc.
 
Can you guys hear the fans on your recievers then when in stand by?

I can't hear a thing.
 
I cant hear the fan at all and I usually pick up on noises
 
I can hear my fan all the time, but my rooms generally hot anyway. So gotta a feeling this mod wont work.

i dont hear the fans on my DM800 as ive wired them to run on 5v. I could mod what ive done so the fun runs at low speed to keep the air moving, then at full speed when the heat builds up.

the heatsink ive put it on, is the hottest in the receiver, so could possibly put it on the main processor heatsink, which the fan is directly over, and the fan wouldnt be on as often, but, the clearance between the top of the heatsink and the fan is not enough to mount the switch, and srying to screw it to the side failed as it just bent the heatsink fins away from the screws

as me and a few other people grouped together to get them to play with, ive got 12 i can sell on, £3 each including recorded delivery (UK mainland only) for those who may be interested in one to play with

ok, first off, i completley removed the PSU from the receiver, i only did this because as i was putting pressure on it to screw the switch to the heatsink, the board was bending because its on small supports, and i didnt want to risk cracking any tracks on the bottom of the board.

i screwed the switch to the top of one of the PSU heatsinks, i made this decision as the screw holes matched up perfectly. With the fan disconnected, i cut into the positive supply cable, and soldered them to THE UNDERNEATH of the switch contacts, i did this as the switch will actually touch the lid when all back together, covered in a bit, and wanted to keep the top as flat as possible.

with the cable cut, and soldered to the switch, i covered the top in PVC insulation tape, i also put tape on the inside of the lid above the switch

put the PSU back in, and connect all the cables to the main board and HDD, dont forget to also connect the grey mains lead (like i forgot and it was dead when i turned it on, and i thought 'oh sh!t' lol)

connect the fan, put the lid back on, and job done

No, it's fine - I thought for a moment that the fan was also a hack, so I wanted to see what you used.
Good job Digi! Better than TM, by far!

One trick if anyone might be interested - the SATA power supply cable carries both 12V (yellow) and 5V (red). The pins in the SATA connector pull out quite easily if you lift-up the tiny plastic tabs on the connector - have a look, you'll see what I mean. From there, it's a trivial job to tap-in into the pins and add the 5-0-12 wiring-out for whatever you want to use it, the non-TM supplied fan for example. Push the pins back into the connector until they 'click', and you're done. Safe, neat & simple.
 
itll be another of my ideas that end up in a future TM hardware ;)
 
That's exactly what it's supposed to look like - why would you think otherwise? Yes, that is a very good solution.
There are no Technomate clones since TMs are usually in the same price range as DM clones already :). Where do you get these ideas...?

The TM500/600 are close to the clone DM 500/600 prices...not the TM800HD though..considering a clone DM800HD and be bought for around 160 quid delivered...theres a 90 quid price difference...
