Summer Transfers 2007

TORRES DON'T COME CHEAP
Hello? Thirty years ago? Yes, this is the Gossip Column. Don't believe what Jimmy Hill tells you - they're going to be making a packet.

Some of them, anyway. And that includes Fernando Torres, who wants a whopping £31.2m in wages to join Liverpool.

'The Atletico Madrid star, 23, is yet to hold talks with Kop boss Rafa Benitez as his advisors hold out for £100,000-a-week,' says The Sun.

'The astonishing package for the striker will amount to £57.9m, including the £24m transfer fee.

'Atletico want Liverpool to pick up a £2.7m tab for a pay-off Torres is due under the terms of his contract.

'The deal will stretch Liverpool's purse strings to the limit and would put Torres' wage behind only skipper Steven Gerrard's £120,000-a-week.'

And if they don't fork up, he'll head off to join Inter Milan's increasingly massive (and we don't just mean Adriano) collection of strikers.

THE STRIKER-GO-ROUND
Never mind that Thaksin Shinawatra's takeover is reported to be in danger of falling through as arrest warrants are issued for him. Never mind that Svennis hasn't taken the job yet. Man Citeh are ready to spend.

And, says the Daily Mirror, they're ready to start that spending by popping up to Middlesbrough with a suitcase full of money - £12m to be precise - and exchanging it for a suitcase full of Yakubu's clothes. And Yakubu. They're signing Yakubu, is what we're trying to say.

'But wait!' we hear you cry. 'We thought Harry 'Arry' Redknapp wanted Yakubu?'

And so he did, dear reader, but he's apparently set to switch his interest to Jermain Defoe.

And despite our headline suggesting there would be loads of strikers involved in this little circle, that's it - because no-one is stupid enough to buy any of Pompey or Citeh's.

BORING, BORING CHELSKI
The Gossip Column is having a day off from serious Frank Lampard talk. Yes, we mean in addition to our actual day off yesterday. Suffice it to say that, depending on what paper you read, he's either playing hardball (which he presumably does better than he plays football) or is desperate to sign, but either way won't be leaving.

THE CHELSKI WAY
Buy high, sell low is Chelski's motto. And so Khalid Boulahrouz, on whom £7m was squandered, will this week be packed off to Sevilla in a £3.5m move, says The Sun, while £21m signing Shaun Wright-Phillips will become £10m signing Shaun Wright-Phillips of Aston Villa.

SAM LANDS GEREMI
Chelski utility man Geremi is expected to become Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce's fourth summer signing later today.

The 28-year-old Cameroon international is understood to have agreed a three-year deal to secure a £2million switch to St James' Park.

He will follow Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal to Tyneside as Allardyce moves swiftly to rebuild the squad he inherited from Glenn Roeder.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail says Toon are ready to step up their efforts to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen from Barcelona for £4.5m.

THE AMAZING MACEO
Maceo Rigters is magic. How do we know? Well, because he can be in two places at once. At least if you believe both the Daily Mirror, which has him pegged as on the way to Blackburn, and the Daily Record, which says Celtic are way ahead in the race to sign him.

FREE GOALKEEPER, ANYONE?
Jerzy Dudek has been released on a free transfer just two years after his heroics helped the Liverpool Reds win the Champions League.

The Gossip Column reckons, and we're making this up entirely, he'll sign for... erm... oh, we don't know. Our seven-a-side team could use a new one, we'll tell you that for nowt. But he'll probably go somewhere like Bolton.

AND THE REST
Bolton are ready to sell Abdoulaye Faye, with Turkish side Besiktas hoping to strike a £3million deal...Leicester are chasing former Middlesbrough striker Joseph-Desire Job, currently with French club Sedan...Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has offered Charlton midfielder Amdy Faye another crack at the Premier League...Wolves will sign Crystal Palace defender Darren Ward for £500,000 after he agreed terms and passed a medical...Southend are set to sign wantaway Barnet midfielder Nicky Bailey for £175,000...Derby winger Ryan Smith will have talks with Millwall this week about a £150,000 switch...Yeovil are set to sign Lloyd Owusu on a free transfer...Fulham are close to signing West Brom striker Diomansy Kamara after Albion accepted a £5million package.

looks like Arsenal have signed da Silva. The Dinamo Zagreb star will move to Emirates Stadium for an undisclosed fee, subject to a medical, after agreeing a four-year deal in North London.

03/07/07 The sorry it's late gossip

ONE IN, TWO OUT AT CHELSKI
Things are finally hotting up at Chelski (but not, alas, weather wise).

Three of the nation's newspapers carry Chelski-related stories on their back pages, and all three are different.

Let's begin with The Daily Mirror, which says that 'Chelsea are making a stunning £14million bid for Sevilla's brilliant Brazilian Daniel Alves - in their biggest move of the summer so far. Blues owner Roman Abramovich has sanctioned a deal for the speedy South American right-back who can also play as a winger'.

That's the good news.

The bad is to be found in The Sun which declares: 'Barcelona will bid £12million for Chelsea's Frank Lampard today. SunSport can reveal the Spanish giants plan to make formal contact for the first time about signing Lamps.'

Despite Chelski being determined to retain the midfielder, and his agent vowing on Monday that he would stay at Stamford Bridge, 'Barca will not be put off and are prepared for a hostile battle to win his signature.'

The paper also quotes Transfer Gossip's good friend, Mr Inside Source, saying: "We know the negotiation will be a complex one. But coach Frank Rijkaard has made his feelings clear on Lampard and it's now up to the directors to find a way to sign him.

"We don't expect it will happen quickly but we have time before the new La Liga season begins and we are prepared to do what is necessary."

And finally, The Times doesn't sound particularly sure that Chelski will retain Arjen Robben's services, noting: 'Robben has two years left on his contract, but Real Madrid are confident that they have been given the green light to sign him for about £15 million.

'Chelsea remain keen on Florent Malouda as a possible replacement for Robben on the left flank. Lyons have said they are willing to sell him, but Chelsea must increase their offer from £12 million to £17 million. The France player returned to training yesterday.'

RAFA WANTS HEINZE ALONG WITH TORRES
It is 43 years since a player moved directly from ManYoo to Liverpool but Rafa Benitez is said to be increasingly confident that he can lure Gabriel Heinze from Old Trafford to Anfield.

Predicting a formal bid this week, The Indy declares: 'Liverpool's manager has identified Heinze as the man to bring resilience to the left back role at Anfield and, despite overtures from Italy and Spain for the Argentine, plus the problems in a transfer between the fiercest rivals in English football, is confident a deal worth £6m can be struck.'

The Times agrees, reporting: 'Benítez is confident that he can seal Heinze's signature for about £4 million - £2.9 million less than United paid for the 29-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain in June 2004. Heinze would strengthen Benítez's defensive options on the left side and would also provide cover at centre back for Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia, 33.'

The interminable pursuit of Torres is slowly nearing resolution, and the player is expected to complete his £27m transfer from Spain later this week.

MORE SIGNINGS FOR ARSENAL
So what now for Arsenal after the acquisition of Eduardo? Is that it for the summer?

The Guardian says 'no': 'The signing of Eduardo does not signal the end of Wenger's attempt to rebuild Arsenal's attack and he is understood to still be interested in Bolton's Nicolas Anelka and Newcastle's Obefemi Martins.'

The Sun also says 'no': 'Eduardo's old side Dinamo Zagreb claim Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is plotting another raid - for £5m-rated midfielder Ognjen Vukojevic.'

And so does The Independent: 'Wenger, who was at Wimbledon yesterday, is now expected to step up his interest in Auxerre full-back Bakary Sagna.' An almost identical claim can be found in The Times, too: 'Wenger, who has returned after a holiday in Italy, will strengthen the squad further when he tries to complete the signing of Bakari Sagna, the defender, for about £6.2 million from Auxerre this week.'

Gawd only knows why the Gunners require another full-back.

Incidentally, somebody at Arsenal appears to have briefed the papers that Eduardo cost around £8m, rather than the £16m claimed by Zagreb.

BIDDING WAR FOR DEFOE AS NUGENT HEADS FOR POMPEY
Having grown tired of waiting for an answer from David Nugent, The Daily Mail's bombshell claim is that 'Sunderland have made an audacious £9million bid for Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe'.

As there seems little prospect of Defoe actually agreeing to the move, the Mail adds weight to their story by claiming that Sunderland's offer 'is likely to spark a bidding war among Premiership clubs for the former West Ham star. Portsmouth, Aston Villa and West Ham are also interested in the player and all three have funds available to trump Sunderland's offer'.

Nugent looks to be heading to Pompey after Everton failed to make a firm offer for the Preston striker.

'There was an increasing feeling that Nugent was using Sunderland's interest as a way of teasing out a bid from Everton, the club that he supported as a child. Everton are unwilling to offer more than £4million. Nugent, 22, has attracted interest from several other clubs and is also expected to hold talks with Portsmouth, possibly as early as today,' says The Times. The Guardian concurs, describing the south coast outfit as being 'left in pole position' to sign Nugent after Sunderland's withdrawal.

If Villa win the Defoe race, by the way, then they might actually look pretty good. Assuming the Daily Star are correct, and they do snap up Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nigel Reo-Coker and Jussi Jaaskelainen over the next couple of weeks as well.

The Reo-Coker deal is expected to go through by Wednesday, while Jaaskelainen could be available if Bolton manage to persuade Jerzy Dudek to head for the Reebok Stadium rather than the Bernabeu.

A NEW NAME ENTERS THE FRAME
Hurrah! A new name enters the merry-go-round, and it's one we've been waiting for all summer.

The Gossip Column has been shocked that no-on had yet been linked to Ghana and Fenerbahce's Stephen Appiah.

Well, the Daily Mirror says West Ham want him. Expect to see him linked to loads more clubs over the next eight weeks.

CITEH CONTINUE YAKUBU PURSUIT
Sven-Goran Eriksson is believed to have made Middlesbrough striker Ayegbeni Yakubu one of his top targets should he become Manchester City manager.

Yakubu, along with Bolton's Nicolas Anelka, is being linked with a move to Eastlands.

According to The Times, 'Gareth Southgate will have face-to-face discussions with Yakubu Ayegbeni today, but there is a growing acceptance that the Nigeria striker will be leaving Middlesbrough this summer. The manager will herald the beginning of preseason training by asking his leading striker for an update on his position, with Manchester City emerging as suitors for his signature.'

LET'S ALL LAUGH AT EVERTON
Having decided against signing Nugent, Everton's principal transfer targets have been named as Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson by both The Independent and Daily Mail.

The Indy claims that 'David Moyes, the Everton manager, is considering a joint £8m offer to Manchester United for Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson.' The Mail's report is slightly more sensationalist, announcing: 'Everton manager David Moyes is ready to make his mark on the transfer market with £17million-worth of deals for Phil Jagielka, Alan Smith, Kieran Richardson and Jason Koumas.'

Transfer Gossip can't stop laughing at the thought of Everton responding to Liverpool's capture of Fernando Torres by unveiling Kieran Richardson.

AND THE REST
Sven-Goran Eriksson is in talks with Spanish club Recreativo Huelva in case his move to Manchester City collapses...Robbie Fowler fears starting the season on the sidelines after admitting he hasn't had a single offer since being released by Liverpool...Charlton want Southend's Freddy Eastwood to replace Darren Bent...Newcastle will sign Geremi on a free from Chelsea, but will fail to persuade Eidur Gudjohnsen to swap Barcelona for Tyneside...Wigan are ready to up their bid for West Brom's Jason Koumas to £5m...Arsenal are one of 'a host' of Premier League clubs trailing Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon...

MANYOO WANT TEVEZ
Just in case you missed it on the front page as you rushed to get into the Gossip Column like a smack addict dodging through the surgery in an attempt to con the doctor into prescribing him some methadone:

ManYoo will sign Carlos Tevez in a £20m deal next week, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims that 'the move will be completed next week, subject to any challenge from West Ham, who still claim to own the registration of the player who saved them from relegation last season.'

ITALIAN JOB FOR LJUNGBERG
The Arsenal Invincibles are all on their way out. After Thierry Henry left for Barcelona, and the likes of Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira disappeared off to foreign climes in recent summers, the next to go will be Freddie Ljungberg,

The Calvin Klein model and occasional winger will, according to the Daily Mirror, make a move to Fiorentina for £3m.

SVEN WILL SIGN A NEW TEAM
Or at least, all but one player of a new team - the Swede, says the Daily Mirror, 'told his backroom staff he needs at least 10 new players to transform the club's fortunes' when he watched them train for the first time on Wednesday.

'Eriksson has a threadbare squad of just 16 first-team players to work with before the start of the new season in four weeks.'

DEFOE TO SNUB MOVE AND STAY AT SPURS
That's what he says, anyway. "We have competition for places in all positions and that can only be good for the team," said the occasional England striker yesterday. And if he's happy at being fourth choice in the pecking order at 23, then fair enough.

The Birmingham Post, somewhat optimistically given Defoe's declaration, still maintains that 'Defoe is, however, known to be close friends with Reo-Coker and it was claimed earlier this week that the 24-year-old had asked his pal to sound out Villa as a potential club he would be interested in talking to'. Which was actually just a sneaky way of dropping in that Villa have finally agreed a fee for Reo-Coker, who will become their first summer signing later today.

More likely than a move for Defoe could be one for Craig Bellamy, who Rafa Benitez admitted yesterday is likely to leave Anfield.

"We have some clubs asking about him and it's a possibility," said Benitez. West Ham are believed to be leading the chase, as they search for a replacement for some Argentinian fellow.

BUT ONE PLAYER WHO COULD BE LEAVING SPURS IS...
Chelski have turned their sights to Pascal Chimbonda after being warned that Dani Alves will cost them £20m.

Jose Mourinho will offer £12m for the right back, according to The Sun.

It could prove to be something of a dilemma for Martin Jol. Chimbonda certainly isn't worth £12m, and it would see Spurs double their money on the player in less than a year. But whatever Chimbonda's individual value, Spurs must sort out their leaky defence to have any hope of breaking into the top four - and you don't do that by selling one of your few consistent performers at the back.

SMITH TOLD HE CAN GO
Alan Smith has repeatedly said over his time at ManYoo that he will fight for his place in the team, and turned down several offers of either loan or permanent moves away from the Premier League champions.

But, with the expected capture of Carlos Tevez, the Daily Mail says the striker has been told by Sir Fergie he has no future at Old Trafford.

Middlesbrough, Everton and Sunderland have all made enquiries about his availability this summer.

AND THE REST
Fulham will sign Diomansy Kamara from West Brom but Heidar Helguson has rejected a move in the opposite direction, while Blackburn have told Fulham to up their offer from £2.5million to £4million if they want to sign striker Jason Roberts. MAKE UP YOUR OWN TEVEZ DETAILS HERE
'Carlos Tevez will cost Manchester United an amazing £38million in wages and fees over the next five years. The Argie striker is poised to sign for boss Alex Ferguson after the Copa America. United are understood to be recruiting the hitman on an 'extended loan' from West Ham with Tevez, 23, earning around £110,000 a week in wages' - The Sun.

'Manchester United will pay businessman Kia Joorabchian £6million for the signature of Carlos Tevez. At the end of an initial two-year deal, United will have the option to buy the striker outright for £15m. The deal will be modelled on Javier Mascherano's move from Upton Park to Liverpool' - The Daily Mirror.

'United have agreed in principle a two-year deal with Kia Joorabchian, the owner of the Argentine striker's economic rights, with an option to buy him outright in the summer of 2009. The club could make an announcement today confirming the deal, subject to obtaining the necessary paperwork and the player passing a medical when he returns from the Copa America in Venezuela later this month' - The Daily Telegraph.

'United will pay £3m-a-year to loan him for two years and can then pay £10m to buy him outright. Tevez will earn about £90,000-a-week so the outlay will be more than £25m' - The Daily Mail

'Carlos Tevez is set to sign for Manchester United in the next two days in a deal that could be worth up to £30m. The Argentine will fly directly from the Copa America in Venezuela to join up with United's pre-season tour to the United States on Monday. Tevez will sign a two-year deal at United with a "loan fee" of between £4m-£8m a year being paid. None of that will go to West Ham, even though they hold his registration and claim that he is "their player". Instead the money will be received by Joorabchian and the companies that control Tevez. United will then have an "exclusive option" in the second year of buying the striker out-right. That fee is expected to be between £14m-£22m' - The Independent.

'Carlos Tévez is expected to complete his transfer to Manchester United in the next 24 hours. The Argentina forward will join the Barclays Premier League champions on an initial two-year loan, at the end of which United will have the chance to buy the player permanently for a fee that could be more than £20 million' - The Times.

BELLAMY ON HIS WAY TO WEST HAM
Fleet Street is united in its belief, however, that Craig Bellamy is on his way to West Ham.

The Welshman is believed to have been in talks with the Hammers last night, discussing a deal that, according to The Daily Mirror, will earn him £4m a year. Good grief.

The stumbling block over the move, as always, is set to be his transfer value.
Liverpool acquired Bellamy for a charge of £6m last summer when they exploited a clause in his contract that enabled him to join a Champions League team for a reduced price. Pool are now thought to be demanding £9m - a steep fee for a player who barely played in the last six months of the season.

The Independent says that 'West Ham have touted an exchange deal for Cissé with Yossi Benayoun, the Israel midfielder who has rejected a new £50,000 a week contract at the club and has been the subject of Liverpool bids of £2m and £4m. The swap, however, rests on the France international's willingness to move to London - Benayoun is anxious to join Liverpool - and the forward has so far refused to countenance any club other than Marseille, where he spent last season on loan, but who are unable to meet Rafael Benitez's £6m valuation.'

CHELSKI FINALLY PREPARE TO SPEND

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon wants to complete the signing of Florent Malouda from Lyon before leaving for the pre-season tour of America next week.

Kenyon has been in contact with the French club over the 26-year-old winger, but insists a deal would not lead to the departure of Arjen Robben.

BIG SPENDERS SPURS TO SPEND BIGGER

Tottenham have taken their summer spending beyond the £30m mark by signing France Under-21 centre-back Younes Kaboul from Auxerre, and they may not be stopping there.

According to The Guardian, the club 'remain keen to sign Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion'.

'Spurs are prepared to pay £6m for Davies and offer Wayne Routledge, valued at £2.5m by the north London club, as part of the deal. That package, however, does not appeal to Albion, with the Championship club demanding more for a player who attracted a £10m bid last year.'

But that was before Davies had a distinctly average season and everyone bar Tottenham dropped their interest in him.

POMPEY SET TO SIGN DUO
Remember yesterday, when The Sun announced that David Nugent would be a Pompey player in the next 24 hours? Well, he isn't. Whoops.

But the Daily Star says he's on the verge of signing for Harry Redknapp's men - as is John Utaka - who will join for £6.75million from Rennes. Pompey may also throw in Nike Kranjcar to seal the deal for the Nigerian international.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail claims POmpey are closing in on a deal to sign Sevilla striker Fredi Kanoute for £7m.

SVEN WANTS STRIKERS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Sven-Goran Eriksson, whose first transfer target as Citeh boss, Nigel Reo-Coker, delivered a double slap to his face yesterday by rejecting the club to sign for Aston Villa and then saying he was making the move because he was desperate to play for a manager like Martin O'Neill, is set to turn his attention to strikers.

The Sun claims that Eriksson will make a £9.5 million bid for Toulouse's Swedish forward Johan Elmander, who notched 11 goals in the French league last season.

Meanwhile, the Daily Star claims that Roque Santa Cruz is Eriksson's primary target, after the Paraguayan striker slipped down the pecking order at Bayern Munich following the signings of Miroslave Klose and Luca Toni.

Santa Cruz would reportedly cost Citeh £8 million, but the deal would not be completed until he returns from the Copa America.

Citeh badly need to strengthen their striking options, after they scored only ten goals at home in the league last season.

AND THE REST
Cardiff are chasing free-agent Robbie Fowler, but Rangers and Celtic are still keen...Leeds United will sell striker David Healy to Lawrie Sanchez's Northern Fulham Ireland to help pay for their mammoth tax bill...Derby County boss Billy Davies will sign Claude Davis from Sheffield United...Leicester will make a £2million double bid for Birmingham pair Stephen Clemence and DJ Campbell...Bobby Zamora is close to agreeing a new bumper contract with West Ham...Wigan are set to make a double move for West Ham striker Marlon Harewood and Fulham midfielder Michael Brown...Wolves boss Mick McCarthy will follow up the signing of Freddy Eastwood from Southend by making a £1.5million move for Sunderland forward Stephen Elliott.

ROBBEN SWAPPING CAPITALS
With The Daily Mirror saying that Arjen Robben has 'his heart on a move to Real Madrid' and The Times reporting that it is Chelski's 'intention to sell him to Real Madrid' it seems reasonable to assume that the winger will begin the new season in the Spanish capital.

Depending on which newspaper you are reading, Robben has either rejected a new contract or talks simply broke down last week. Either way, it adds up to the same result: an imminent sale.

The Dutchman's departure has been hastenened by the arrival of Florent Malouda from Lyon. He is expected to formally complete his £13.8m switch later today.

For what it's worth, chief executive Peter Kenyon (boo hiss) says that he would be Chelski's final signing of the summer.

SMITH TO HOLD FERGIE TALKS
Another player closer to sorting out his future is Alan Smith.

The occasional ManYoo and England forward has been linked with a whole host of clubs this summer and, according to The Daily Mirror, 'wants talks with Sir Alex Ferguson this week before deciding whether to quit Manchester United.'

'Smith will not leave Old Trafford until he is sure his first-team chances are remote - and he plans to discuss his future with Ferguson to find out the answers.'

Middlesbrough, Everton, Portsmouth and Aston Villa are among his prospective suitors.

LIVERPOOL BID FOR BABEL
Ryan Babel's pledge to join Arsenal after another season at Ajax may require urgent revision: The Independent claims that Liverpool have offered £6.75m for his services.

'Babel, 20, has attracted interest from all over Europe but it seems Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, wants to make him the club's second significant signing of the close season after Fernando Torres. The player impressed in the Netherlands Under-21 team who won the European Championship on home soil last month and is regarded as the best of a crop of outstanding young Dutch talent,' the newspaper reports.

Yet there's no mention of Babel elsewhere, despite the rest of Fleet Street accepting that a new winger is Benitez's top priority.

'Benitez is hopeful of some resolution in his protracted pursuit of Yossi Benayoun this week while, at the same time, attempting to land a second winger to rival the £20.2 million capture of Torres from Atlético Madrid. Ricardo Quaresma, of FC Porto, who would cost about £15 million, and Alessandro Mancini, the £11 million-rated AS Roma player, are thought to be under consideration, although BenÍtez has so far kept his cards close to his chest. Gabriel Heinze, the Argentina defender, is also wanted, although Manchester United are reluctant to sell him to their fierce rivals,' says The Times.

And Benitez himself is quoted in The Daily Mail saying: "Any move for Benayoun to join us from West Ham will not be linked with the Bellamy sale. We have made an offer which has been rejected.

"He is a player I like and would want to sign, and I believe he wants to join us, but that deal will be separate now. We will have to wait and see what happens now next week."

ANELKA PLEDGES HIMSELF TO BOLTON...FOR NOW
Transfer Gossip gives it two weeks before these quotes by Nicolas Anelka are reprinted in Mediawatch under a headline of 'Read My Lips':

"I like Sammy Lee's philosophy and I am looking forward to working with him at the club. He is passionate and wants to continue Bolton's recent success. His ambition matches mine and I want to commit to him. There has been a lot of speculation about my future but I can honestly say that I am very happy in England and at Bolton."

EVEN DAVIES' AGENT ADMITS HE IS OVER-PRICED
At last, some sensible statements about Curtis Davies, inexplicably valued at £8m by West Bromwich Albion.

"West Brom are trying to price him out of the market - £8 million is totally unrealistic," Phil Sproson, Davies's agent, complained to The Guardian. "What foundation is there for that? He's an under 21 and had one season in the Premiership."

With sense like that, Mr Sproson is clearly too realistic to remain an agent for long.

AND THE REST
Chris Baird is set to join Sunderland from Southampton in a £3m deal...West Ham have made a shock £5.5m bid for West Brom striker Diomansy Kamara...Coventry are chasing freed Birmingham midfielder Julian Gray...David Nugent will return to training with Preston today with his future still in doubt, having stalled on a move to Portsmouth...Sheffield United hope to snap up right-back Jean-Joel Perrier Doumbe after he was snubbed by Celtic.

BABEL NEXT FOR POOL
Ryan Babel is expected to become a Liverpool player by the end of the week.

The Reds are reported to have tabled an improved bid of £13.5m for the Ajax winger last night and The Sun says that 'Ajax chiefs have admitted the left winger, 20, will be packing his bags for Merseyside'.

'Babel can operate down the flanks, as well as through the middle, and Benitez has earmarked him for a role on the wing, in a development that casts further doubt on his long-running pursuit of West Ham's Yossi Benayoun,' adds The Daily Mail.

The paper also repeats claims that Sam Allardyce has joined the chase for ManYoo's Gabriel Heinze. In one of the weakest sentences ever to be published on Fleet Street, it declares: 'But if Liverpool win that particular contest, St James' Park boss Sam Allardyce - armed with new owner Mike Ashley's millions - could instantly switch his attention to John Arne Riise, who could find himself surplus to requirements at Anfield.'

Note the double use of the word 'could'. They're simply making this up as they go along.

COMINGS AND GOINGS AT ARSENAL
Cesc Fabregas, William Gallas, Freddie Ljungberg and Tomas Rosicky are the latest players linked with a move out of Arsenal.

Real Madrid have made public their interest in the Spanish midfielder while Gallas will hold talks with Arsene Wenger after criticising the club's transfer policy.

However, he could be placated by reading The Independent, which says that Wenger is 'poised to launch a £13m bid to sign Newcastle United's Obafemi Martins later this week'.

'The Arsenal manager is also adding to his defensive options with the former French Under-21 right-back Bakary Sagna arriving in London last night for talks after Arsenal agreed a fee, thought to be close to £7m, with Auxerre. Sagna, 24, has pushed for the move to the Emirates for some time and even threatened to boycott pre-season training.'

Meanwhile, according to The Guardian, 'Fiorentina officials travelled to London yesterday to offer Arsenal £5.5m for Fredrik Ljungberg. The Serie A club's director of sport, Pantaleo Corvino, and chief executive, Sandro Mencucci, arrived to sign the 30-year-old Sweden captain, who is wanted by several European clubs after two barren seasons in north London.

'Fiorentina are offering a four-year deal worth £1.5m a year - a significant pay cut, although it would make him the Italian club's highest earner - and are ready to sweeten the deal by also offering Valeri Bojinov, the prolific 21-year-old Bulgaria striker.'

Oh and Corriere dello Sport says that Juventus will move for Rosicky as a replacement for the retiring Pavel Nedved.

VILLA TO BID FOR DEFOE
Aston Villa are reportedly set to make an initial £8million bid for Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe hit 18 goals for Spurs in league and cup last season, but now appears to be fourth-choice striker at White Hart Lane.

SVEN'S WISH LIST KINDA REVEALED
The Times reckons that Sven-Goran Eriksson will 'make Christian Wilhelmsson his first signing as Manchester City manager. The £2 million-rated Nantes and Sweden winger is thought to be keen on the idea of working under his compatriot, with Eriksson hopeful that a deal can be concluded by the end of the week'.

Having apparently demanded ten new players, Eriksson continues to be linked with Toulouse's Johan Elmander, Peter Crouch, and Yakubu.

ROBBEN OUT OF CHELSKI?
According to The Sun, 'Arjen Robben's lawyer was in Madrid last night for secret talks over the winger's transfer to the Bernabeu'. So not so secret talks, then? Florent Malouda's arrival at the Bridge certainly seems to suggest that the Dutchman's days at Stamford Bridge are numbered.

Also on his way out is Khalid Boulahrouz, one of Jose Mourinho's inspirational buys, who joined for £7m but now looks bound for Sevilla in a £3.5m deal.

AND THE REST
Portsmouth are set to offer Fredi Kanoute a route back to the Premier League despite having a £4.7million bid turned down...Alan Curbishley is still in the hunt for three players despite taking his spending to almost £38million with the £7.5m buy of Craig Bellamy...Stephen Clemence and DJ Campbell are Leicester City targets...Southampton defender Chris Baird was last night on the verge of completing his £3million move to Sunderland...

Martin O'Neill has been told he will have to pay £4.5m to lure Luke Young from Charlton...Everton boss David Moyes has added Wigan's England Under-21 defender Leighton Baines to his shopping list...Blackburn boss Mark Hughes wants Bayern Munich striker Roque Santa Cruz....Celtic have rejected a £1.5m approach from Fulham for left-back Lee Naylor...Leeds striker Robbie Blake is in talks with Burnley about a £500,000 return to Turf Moor.

COMING AND GOING AT ARSENAL
As you were told in this column yesterday, Arsenal are planning on throwing some money around.

First, in the words of The Guardian, Arsenal 'are set to confirm the £7m signing of Bakary Sagna from Auxerre within the next 48 hours. The former France Under-21 right-back has held talks at the Emirates Stadium and will undergo a medical ahead of a probable announcement today'.

Sagna had threatened to strike if he wasn't allowed to move. Which bodes well for his future at a selling club like Arsenal when one of the big boys comes in.

And more than one paper has been convinced by The Indy's claims earlier in the week that the Gunners will activate the £13m release clause in Obafemi Martins' contract.

Meanwhile, The Guardian maintains that 'Talks have continued over Freddie Ljungberg's possible £5.5m move to Fiorentina', while 'The future of Cesc Fábregas, meanwhile, is expected to become clearer in the next two days. Reports in Spain continue to link him with a move to Real Madrid after the club's sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, and new coach, Bernd Schuster, both expressed their admiration this week.'

IT DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN
'Liverpool have reached an agreement with West Ham for Yossi Benayoun who will sign a four-year contract with the Anfield club today, pending a medical. The go-ahead came after protracted negotiations since Benayoun surprisingly refused to sign a new contract he had earlier agreed with West Ham.'

We're not sure we need to add to what The Guardian have said there.

Oh, except that if Benayoun's arrival means Jermaine Pennant is surplus to requirements, he'll probably join the West Ham Cheats' collection of nasty players who no-one likes.

VILLA MOVE FOR DEFENDERS; GOSSIP COLUMN SHOULD HANDLE NEGOTIATIONS
While reports continue to link Aston Villa with a move for Jermain Defoe, Martin O'Neill is apparently looking at the other end of the pitch.

Firstly, Villa are favourites to land Luke Young from Charlton. The Addicks say they want £4.5m, Villa are apparently willing to pay £2.5m. If we had to pluck a figure out of the air for this one happening, it's £3.5m. That was easy - the Gossip Column should conduct all transfer negotiations.

Villa are also, say the papers, interested in Brede Hangeland. Depending on which rag you read, the Norway defender will cost anywhere between £3m and £5m. £4m, then?

Meanwhile, Villa have beaten off competition from Spurs and ManYoo to sign 15-year-old Watford starlet Harry Forrester.

A MIRROR INTO THE PAST
The Daily Mirror says that if Chelski can't persuade Sevilla to sell them Dani Alves, they'll move for Pascal Chimbonda.

Which is what the other papers were saying a week or so ago. Does that make the story more or less credible?

Chelski will apparently move for 29 year-old Frenchman Chimbonda by offering Shaun Wright-Phillips and Glen Johnson as makeweights, if Sevilla turn down their offer for Alves.

OH, WE SHOULD MENTION
The papers are pretty much united on this one: Pompey will sign David Nugent today.

GOOD LORD, WE HOPE THIS GOES THROUGH
Tottenham have reportedly made a late effort to beat Sevilla to the signature of Hertha Berlin's self-styled 'Ghetto Kid' Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The 20-year-old central midfielder is rated as one of the hottest prospects in the Bundesliga and has been linked with a move to Sevilla for most of the summer.

However, Spurs boss Martin Jol is said to have put in a £5million bid - almost double what the Spanish Primera Liga outfit have offered - in an attempt to gazump the UEFA Cup winners. Hertha boss Dieter Hoeness is now considering the club's next move, according to the Daily Mail.

NERVOUS TIME FOR TOFFEES
This one just won't go away, will it? Everton boss David Moyes is reportedly closing in on the £2.5m capture of Charley from Big Brother's less talented cousin, Kieran Richardson.

AND THE REST
Wigan boss Chris Hutchings has urged West Ham to forgive and forget as he looks to seal Marlon Harewood's move to the JJB Stadium...Sam Allardyce is in talks with Marseille skipper Habib Beye over a £2m move...Birmingham want Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly to replace Leicester-bound Stephen Clemence...Derby boss Billy Davies is hoping to push through a £1.5m deal for Monaco striker Mohamed Kallon...Kilmarnock have taken former Toulouse keeper Damien Rascle on trial.

TWO MORE FOR POOL
Here's one everyone agrees on:

Liverpool are poised to complete the signings of Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun today.

Babel has arrived on Merseyside to complete a medical, while Benayoun is expected to be confirmed as a Liverpool player at a press conference
during the next 24 hours.

ONE STRIKER STAYING AT TOON, ANOTHER SET TO ASK TO LEAVE

The good news for Newcastle fans is that Michael Owen has pledged his immediate future to the club.

The England striker insists he is committed to Newcastle and is determined to produce his best for the club next season.

However, the bad news is that Obafemi Martins continues to be linked with a move out of St James'.

The player reputedly wants to leave and The Guardian reports: 'Martins has said he will meet Allardyce tomorrow to discuss his future.

'Martins, touted for a £13m move to either Arsenal or West Ham United, was speaking in Nigeria yesterday and said of recent speculation: "Right now all I know is what I read in the papers. I have a meeting with the manager when I get back to training. We will see what happens then."'

Hmmm.

CITEH IN FOR FREDDIE
Arsenal's bid for Martins could be partially funded by the sale of Freddie Ljungberg.

The 30-year-old has been told he can leave the Gunners and The Guardian says that 'Manchester City are believed to be back in the hunt for Ljungberg. They are understood to have held talks with the midfielder and his agent on Tuesday about a possible £6m move to Eastlands'.

The Independent, on the other hand, reports: 'Fredrik Ljungberg is close to agreeing a £5.5m move to Fiorentina - although there is a major stumbling block over the Arsenal midfielder's wages. The 30-year-old Swedish international has been told he can leave, after nine years at the club, but the Italians do not want to pay the £70,000 a week he earns at the Emirates.

'They are prepared to pay a straight transfer fee for Ljungberg after initially offering the Danish defender Per Kroldrup in exchange. However, Arsenal are believed to have indicated they had little interest in the former Everton player.'

MORE POSSIBLE ARSENAL DEALS
And if you're wondering why Arsenal still haven't announced the signing of Bakari Sagna, then The Times says they are still haggling over a fee with Auxerre. The Sun, though, reports it as a done deal and also claims:

'Arsenal are ready to splash the cash yet again with a £2million swoop for Yoan Gouffran. The French striker, 21, turned down a Chelsea move last year to help Caen to promotion.

'But Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is willing to let him stay there on loan for a year to pick up first-team experience.'

WIGAN MOVE FOR HAREWOOD
According to The Daily Mirror, 'Wigan boss Chris Hutchings will sign Marlon Harewood from West Ham in a £3.7million deal today - after clearing Lee McCulloch to join Rangers. Hutchings has decided to come up with an increased offer for up-for-grabs Hammers hitman Harewood and hopes to tie up the move today.'

If so, it would be Wigan's seventh signing of the close season.

ALVES WANTS TO JOIN CHELSKI
Chelski, in the words of the Daily Mirror, 'were last night closing in on a £16million deal for Daniel Alves after the Brazilian star admitted: "I want to join them. They are one of the best clubs in the world."'

With a demonstration of loyalty like that to his former - sorry, current - club, he'll fit right in at Stamford Bridge.

Anyway, Chelski are haggling with Sevilla over the price, with the Spaniards initially demanding £24m. The Blues are willing to add insult to injury, by offering to make up the difference with Khalid Boulahrouz.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
'ROY KEANE is going back to Manchester United to sign winger Kieran Richardson for Sunderland in a £5.5million deal.

'And the big-spending Black Cats boss is also offering England wide boy Richardson £35,000 a week to talk him into joining his Premiership campaign.'

Oddly, the Daily Mirror have forgotten to include a punchline.

LET'S SEE IF THIS HAPPENS
The Daily Star's back page proclaims that Real Madrid will today test Arsenal's resolve by making a £20m move for Cesc Fabregas.

That's today. Thursday.

They also claim that 'Fabregas has already agreed personal terms with Madrid - worth £80,000-a-week'.

And the big bid is going to come in today, remember. That's what the Star's Danny Fullbrook says, and he'll be getting our cap doffed tomorrow if he's right.

So, the clock is ticking.

CESC TO STAY. BUT IT WAS CLOSE
Aside from the latest development in the Carlos Tevez saga, the biggest transfer news this morning is of a deal that will not be happening:

Cesc Fabregas has turned down Real Madrid to stay at Arsenal.

In a Spanish radio interview, the midfielder announced: "I have talked with them and they made a great effort to get me to sign. It was a very difficult decision for me but with Thierry Henry leaving I feel that I can't leave the club that has done so much for me."

But Arsenal fans should be alarmed at the indications that, despite committing himself to the club just two weeks ago, the 20-year-old apparently gave serious consideration to leaving. Only last-ditch talks with Arsene Wenger apparently persuaded him to remain.

"Wenger met with him yesterday and convinced him to stay. It's like a father and son relationship," his agent Joseba Diaz told Spanish television.

"Wenger said with Thierry Henry gone [to Barcelona] they were going to need his services more than ever to help see them through and Cesc is never going to let down the person who showed confidence in him."

The Gunners made their second major signing of the summer yesterday when they acquired full-back Bacary Sagna for £6m. The Times believes that more new faces will still be arriving - and, according to The Daily Mirror, Wenger will have the funds for further recruitment as Jose Antonio Reyes is set to be sold to Real Madrid for £6.5m deal.

BECKS' MATE AT TOON
Aldo Duscher, the Argentine meanie who broke David Beckham's foot ahead of the World Cup, is on trial at Newcastle.

'The 28-year-old, who is out of contract at Deportivo La Coruña so is available on a free,' reports The Indy.

Even better is the claim in The Sun that Albert Luque has given up his honeymoon in a bid to impress Sam Allardyce.

"He got married at the weekend but has not had a honeymoon. His attitude is exceptional," commented the new Toon boss.

Just imagine how impressed Mrs Luque will be if her other half is still chucked out of St James'...

THREE CLUBS ARE MAD
Talk about having more money than sense. Man Citeh have become the third Premier League club to be linked with Kieran Richardson after The Daily Mirror announced:

'Sven Goran Eriksson has taken on hard-man Roy Keane with an audacious bid to hijack Sunderland's £5.5million bid for Manchester United winger.'

It's just frightening. Everton also want Richardson...and ManYoo probably can't believe their luck.

YAKUBU STILL LINKED WITH CITEH
Prospective Man Citeh signing Rolando Bianchi should, in the words of The Times, 'conclude the formalities of the deal this morning having agreed a four-year contract worth £40,000 a week that will make him the club's best-paid player.'

'Bianchi's arrival will almost certainly spell the end of Bernardo Corradi's short and undistinguished career at the City of Manchester Stadium, with the former Valencia, Lazio and Inter Milan striker expected to return to Italy this summer, although with money no longer an issue in the wake of Thaksin Shinawatra's £81.6 million takeover, Eriksson is likely to leave the process of unloading players until after he has lured his principal targets.'

Top of the list remains Boro striker Yakubu. The paper claims that 'Eriksson is believed to be confident of signing the 24-year-old Nigerian, especially in light of his good relations with Pini Zahavi, the player's agent.'

THE MOST PREDICTABLE TRANSFER OF THE SUMMER
Well, this one will shock you. London Northern Irish's manager Lawrie Sanchez will add to the signings of Norn Iron's Steve Davis, Norn Iron's Chris Baird and Norn Iron's Aaron Hughes with...Norn Iron's David Healy.

The Daily Mirror says LNI are on the brink of signing the striker for £2m, at which point they will move for every other player from Sanchez's Norn Iron side.

HEAVENS, IS FREDDY ADU STILL ONLY 18?
Freddy Adu's agent is expected to speak to representatives of Celtic next week which might pave the way for the talented American youngster to move to Glasgow.

The 18-year-old USA midfielder, currently starring in the Under-20 World Cup in Canada, could meet Parkhead officials in Denver next Thursday after the Scottish champions jet in for a friendly against a Major League Soccer All-Stars select team.

AND THE REST
Chelski want Cardiff starlet Aaron Ramsey, and will loan the Welsh side Scott Sinclair to seal a deal for him, while Wolves want to borrow Michael Mancienne from the Blues...Jerzy Dudek will snub Bolton to sit on the bench at Real Madrid...Thomas Gravesen will move to Sheffield United - if they pay him a fortune...DJ Campbell's move to Leicester is in doubt, after Charlton decided to jump in. SHEVCHENKO SET TO GO BACK TO MILAN
In a move that will properly mess up what the Gossip Column thought was a clever little tactic for its fantasy team, Andriy Shevchenko could be set for a return to AC Milan just a year after leaving for Chelski - and for less than half of the £30m the Blues paid.

'Roman Abramovich will hold crunch talks with Andriy Shevchenko next week before deciding whether to allow him to go back to AC Milan,' says the Daily Mirror.

'Shevchenko, 30, endured a miserable first year in London with Chelsea when he failed to win a regular first team place because of a lack of form and injuries.

'That has led to AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliano making enquiries about him.'

The Daily Express concur, saying Milan 'are waiting for the green light from Roman Abramovich in order to buy back Andriy Shevchenko for £15million.

'They want to take the unsettled striker back to the San Siro, but Abramovich himself must decide if he will be sold.

'Sporting director Adriano Galliani contacted the Blues at the end of last week to lodge his club's official interest.

'But he was told billionaire owner Abramovich would be the only person to decide whether the Ukrainian would be allowed to leave.'

JUST SO YOU KNOW
The Daily Mail says our old buddy Carlos Tevez will be unveiled as a ManYoo player on Thursday.

LET'S ALL LAUGH AT SUNDERLAND
In the words of The Times:

'Sunderland agreed a deal to sign Kieran Richardson last night, after completing the signing of Michael Chopra earlier in the day. The club have agreed a fee of £5.5 million with Manchester United for Richardson, the midfield player who came through the ranks at Old Trafford.'

£10.5m for the pair. Ten point five million pounds.

Jesus wept. As, we assume, did a lot of Sunderland fans.

YOU HAVE TO LOVE GOSSIP
After the Daily Mirror decided yesterday that Spurs were going to sell Anthony Gardner for £3m, the Daily Mail have followed suit.

The Mail claim Gardner is off to Man Citeh. One player who won't be joining him there is Freddie Ljungberg, who says he could never leave Arsenal for another Premier league club. Although one has to suspect that were it, for example, the other clu in Manchester after him, he might not be so unwilling.

But the names being linked with Citeh are still quite interesting. The Mail also has them as chasing Ludovic Giuly and Thiago Motta, both of whom found themselves surplus to requirements at Barcelona.

ARSENAL BIDDING FOR ARGENTINE STRIKER
According to The Sun, Arsenal are poised to smash their transfer record with a £15million swoop for Argentinian striker Rodrigo Palacio.

The paper, apparently reacting to reports in Argentina, claims that the 25-year-old will 'fly to London tomorrow for a medical after Boca Juniors accepted the Gunners' offer. He is destined to wear the No 14 shirt vacated by Thierry Henry's recent £16m move to Barcelona.'

Palacio has scored 39 goals in 79 Boca appearances.

THIS IS THE BEST STORY THIS SUMMER
Which newspaper is claiming that 'Newcastle have made an audacious enquiry for Fifa World Player of the Year Ronaldinho'?

Is it The Sun? The Daily Mirror? Or even The Daily Star?

Err, no, it's The Daily Telegraph.

The broadsheet claims that the Toon were quoted a price of £58m after 'the Brazilian's name was raise during talks over the availability of Barcelona's players'.

Alas, £58m was too much even for their billionaire new owner Mike Ashley.

Hang on, the bloke's a billionaire, so how can £58m be too much for him?

The newspaper also reports that 'Newcastle remain hopeful of hijacking Liverpool's attempts to sign Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze. Allardyce is equally keen to keep Obafemi Martins at the club and is in talks with the striker. The Nigerian has a £13m release clause in his contract'.

ROBBEN CLOSE TO CHELSKI EXIT
Real Madrid have finally made a formal bid for Arjen Robben. Or so says The Sun.

The Spanish champions are believed to have made a £13.5m offer for the Chelski winger - exactly the amount that the Blues spent on Florent Malouda.

Chelski, meanwhile, continue to be linked with a move for Daniel Alves.

DEFOE TO STAY AT SPURS
Yesterday's tabloids predicted a £25m Aston Villa spending spree this week, with Jermain Defoe, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Luke Young tipped to head to Villa Park.

The first of those is apparently a non-starter. 'Jermain Defoe will turn down interest from Aston Villa to stay and fight for his Tottenham place following the £16.5m arrival of Darren Bent,' says The Guardian.

'His future has been the subject of intense speculation but, although he has yet to sign an extension on a contract which expires in 2009, Defoe wants to start the season at White Hart Lane and compete for his place with Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Bent.'

The Times says Villa hope to tie up a £5m deal with Charlton for Luke Young, but that makes little sense if The Independent's claim that he is available for £2.5m is to be believed.

As for Shaun Wright-Phillips, the Gossip Column hasn't heard anything. But if we wanted to wildly speculate, we'd point out that he's in America with Chelski, and Villa go to America on tour this week. And are owned by an American. Expect to see that story reproduced in a tabloid over the next two days.

Meanwhile, Shaun Maloney's agent has wasted no time in laughing off yesterday's reports from the Scottish tabloids that the midfielder will make the step back down to the SPL. "There is always talk about Shaun because he is a talented player but this is just completely made up," smarmed the suit.

BEATTIE TO BE PRICED OUT OF MARKET?
David Moyes is a good manager, of that there is no doubt.

However, his whining this week about not having money to spend does overlook the fact he's wasted more than £10m on Per Kroldrup - who made a mighty total of two appearances for the Toffees before being packed back off to Italy - and James Beattie.

Which probably explains why Moyes is desperate to recoup some cash on the chubby striker.

'Blackburn have made an official inquiry for the striker and were hopeful of getting him for around £2.5m,' reports the Daily Mail.

'But Everton manager David Moyes does not want to let the 29-year-old go cheaply.

'Middlesbrough, who are also interested in Spurs striker Mido, will look to Beattie if they lose out to Everton in the £6m race for Manchester United's Alan Smith.'

Moyes will demand £4m for Beattie, who, for the record, last scored from open play in March 2006.

Boro, says the Mail, 'are also fearful of a substantial bid from Manchester City this week for Yakubu'.

AND THE REST
Craig Gordon wants out of Hearts...Charles N'Zogbia will spark a bidding war between Fulham and Bolton by asking Newcastle for a transfer...Darius Vassell is the first victim of Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City revolution. The striker will be allowed to leave Eastlands for just £1.5m...Real Madrid are ready to revive their interest in Manchester United's Gabriel Heinze...Portsmouth will give Brazilian striker Geovanni Mauricio a two-week trial.

Black Cats land Richardson

By Lewis Rutledge 16/07/07

richardson_kieran.jpg

Sunderland have snapped up Kieran Richardson from Manchester United.

A fee has not been disclosed for the versatile midfielder but it is believed to be in the region of £5.5million.

Manchester City were also linked with Richardson but Black Cats boss Roy Keane has won the race for his signature after striking a deal with his former club.

Richardson has signed a four-year deal and is relishing the prospect of playing at The Stadium of Light.

"It's an exciting move for me," the 22-year-old told Sunderland's official website.

"I know all about Roy Keane and I'm looking forward to playing for his team.

"Sunderland are a big club and it's a massive move for me."

Keane added: "I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Kieran to Sunderland.

"He's ready for a fresh challenge and hopefully Sunderland will provide that for him."

Richardson is Keane's fourth summer signing following Greg Halford, Russell Anderson and Michael Chopra.

He could make his debut in Wednesday's friendly against Darlington.

LIVERPOOL CAN SIGN HEINZE FOR £6m
The Sun says that Gabriel Heinze can become the first player to move between ManYoo and Liverpool in, erm...ages, for £6m.

Describing concerns that ManYoo would block the move in the past tense, the newspaper claims: 'Heinze has been told by United chiefs he can join any club he wishes as long as they come up with that magic figure.

'Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson has already spent £50m and plans to splash out almost half as much again for Carlos Tevez. He knows he must recoup some of that cash - and Heinze is a realistic way of doing that.'

And Phil Chisnall will lose his claim to fame.

ECONOMIC PULL FOR DIDIER
For the second time this summer, Didier Drogba has asked for more money from Chelski. Sorry, our mistake, he's suggested he could leave Chelski.

On Monday, AC Milan confirmed their interest in the Ivorian striker, who responded by telling The Sun:

"For now things are still fuzzy, not clear. Yet any good offer could tip the scale in another team's favour. I have heard there are offers from Porto, Barca and the rest. But I've not made up my mind.

"There is no season I don't have many offers. Yet as a disciplined player I look at my career, which is uppermost, and my family.

"I would love to stay in England. I want to improve on my last season's performance and to win more titles in England. But any strong economic pull can make me change my mind."

Can anyone actually imagine Didier saying the words 'strong economic pull'?

ROBBEN DEAL AGREED TODAY?
The Sun says Chelski 'have told Real Madrid to up their offer for Arjen Robben to £17million.

'The Spanish giants made a £13.5m bid for the Dutch winger, 23.

'Robben has told the Blues he wants the move - and the two clubs are set to agree a compromise deal of £16m over the next 24 hours.'

PETROV AND SWP FOR SPURS
The Independent says that 'The Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov will be Tottenham's priority signing this summer, with the club confident that they are very close to sealing a deal for the left-sided midfielder'.

And even if Spurs sign Petrov from Atletico Madrid for a fee not in excess of £8m, The Indy believes they could still make the long-awaited bid for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

'While Tottenham would like Wright-Phillips they are concerned about the potential effect that signing him could have on Aaron Lennon, who was picked ahead of the Chelsea man for last summer's World Cup final squad. However, they acknowledge that they need cover on the right wing after Lennon missed periods of last season with a knee injury,' the newspaper reports.

PALACIO STILL ONLY A 'COULD'
It is difficult to tell whether they are reacting to the tales in Monday's newspapers or if they genuinely believe it, but a host of broadsheets are reporting that Arsenal are close to signing Rodrigo Palacio.

The Argentine is described by The Indy as 'More of a penalty-box predator than Henry, he prowls the back-line and, though only 5ft 9in, frequently heads goals', while The Daily Telegraph says that 'The 25-year-old, who has scored 39 goals in 79 Boca matches, is understood to be flying to London for a medical.'

ALLARDYCE KEEN TO CATCH UP
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is reportedly weighing up a bid for Italian defender Andrea Barzagli.

Barzagli, who currently plays for Serie A side Palermo, is highly regarded in his homeland, and is apparently thought of by Italy's World Cup-winning skipper Fabio Cannavaro as the 'next great Italian defender'.

Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce has voiced his frustration after being repeatedly rebuffed in the transfer market in recent weeks.

"We need to bring in at least three or four players before the start of the season. We were off to a sprint start, but we've slipped a bit," he complained. "Fulham are up to £19 million, Wigan past £10 million, Tottenham well into the £20 millions and Manchester United and Liverpool well into the £40 millions, so at the moment we've just lagged behind the rest and we need to keep up."

According to The Daily Telegraph, 'Top-class defenders remain the priority but Allardyce is resigned to missing out on Barcelona's Edmilson. He also accepted yesterday that Manchester United's Gabriel Heinze will choose a more successful club, and showed little of his reported interest in Fulham's Franck Queudrue.'

AND THE REST

WENGER WANTS ANELKA NOT MARTINS
Arsene Wenger wants to take Nicolas Anelka back to the club he sulked his way out of all those years ago.

Reports had linked the Gunners with a move for Obafemi Martins, but he now seems to have turned his attention to Thierry Henry's predecessor in his search for Thierry Henry's successor.

'Wenger has not yet given up on a £10.5m move for ex-Arsenal bad boy Nicolas Anelka,' reports the Daily Mirror, while several other tabloids nod their heads sagely.

WE'RE SO GLAD SVEN IS BACK
Martin O'Neill is making sensible, non-showy signings. Sam Allardyce is working patiently to rebuild Newcastle's defence. Even Harry Redknapp seems to have a plan worked out.

Thank God there's someone in the Premier League who knows how to spend a billionaire's cash. Madly.

'Manchester City are ready to pay £10 million for Nery Castillo, the Olympiacos and Mexico forward,' reports The Times, while The Independent claims they're after Romanian striker Ciprian Marica. It follows Sven throwing millions and millions at some guy who's had one good season in Italy, some guy who we've never heard of from Switzerland and some guy who was good a few years ago for Barcelona. On Championship Manager.

That's what the Gossip Column calls management.

JOSE WANTS ARJEN ROBBEN TO STAY
The BBC told us last night that a deal taking Arjn Robben to Real Madrid had been agreed. But then, the Beeb also told us that its phone-ins weren't scandalously rigged. So who knows if it's true?

Well, Jose thinks he does, and has said again that he wants Robben to stay at Chelski. But if the Blues do land Royston Drenthe, we can't see it happening.

Meanwhile, The Times says Chelski are prepared to up their offer for Pascal Chimbonda to £8m. Which, considering past offers have reportedly included £10m plus Glen Johnson, isn't much upping really.

WIGAN WANT LUALUA
Having been snubbed by Marlon Harewood, Wigan are looking for someone else to spearhead their march into the Championship.

And the Latics are ready to turn their attention to Lomano LuaLua, surplus to requirements at Pompey. LuaLua decared last season that he was as good as Ronaldinho. He'll need to be - the Gossip Column calculates that Wigan's strikers will have to score 200 league goals next season, just to offset 'The Bramble Effect'.

But what's that? Could Wigan be beaten to the punch again?

They could, because West Ham's policy of bidding for every player in the entire world and taking on anyone who'll actually agree to join them has kicked into gear again, and they want LuaLua too.

SPEAKING OF WHICH
The Daily Express says West Ham are ready to make a £5m bid for Reading and Ingerland left-back Nicky Shorey.

Steve Coppell insisted a couple of weeks ago that he wouldn't sell Shorey, but is yet to offer him a new contract. Both West Ham and Newcastle are apparently willing to double his wages.

BLESS THE TELEGRAPH
Neeeooowwww. That's the sound of the tabloids jumping on a rumour faster than Lewis Hamilton can drive round a racetrack.

Put put bang put put crash put put put put. That's the sound of the Daily Telegraph's knackered old vintage motor trying to keep up by bringing yesterday's news that Sunderland are willing to pay £9m for Craig Gordon.

VILLA WANT A RIGHT BACK
Aston Villa, says the Daily Mirror, are 'lining up a £2.5million bid for Justin Hoyte.

'Arsenal are now prepared to listen to offers for the 22-year-old.'

Martin O'Neill confirmed this week that a right back is high on his list of priorities, and is believed to have decided against spending over the odds on Charlton's Luke Young.

AND THE REST
The Tevez affair is going to FIFA...Sammy Lee wants to take Nantes' Swedish winger Christian Wilhelmsson to the Reebok Stadium...Bobby Zamora could be heading for Blackburn as Mark Hughes looks to improve on the cheap...Andy Cole is looking more and more likely to join Hull...Birmingham City have bid £2.5m for Paul Robinson. The one from West Brom - the Spurs chap isn't worth that...DJ Campbell will spin the Watford wheels of steel...Fulham Norn Irish are about to snap up Lee Cook from QPR for £2.5m...Cardiff could still land Robbie Fowler. LIVERPOOL TURN TO ANOTHER LEFT BACK
Rafa Benitez is a genius. Signing some quality wingers at last isn't enough for the Spaniard - he's hit upon the fact that if he signs every full back in the world, no-one will be able to play against them.

Having been told that he can't have Gabriel Heinze, then, he's turned his attention to Girogio Chiellini. The Daily Star says the Juventus defender would cost £7m - pocket change in comparison to most of Liverpool's summer signings.

HAMMERS TO LIGHTEN MOOD WITH DYER
As award-winning website* F365 told you yesterday, West Ham are being strongly tipped to make a £4m move for former adult movie star Kieron Dyer.

After his video exploits shocked the world, Kieron has largely disappeared off the radar. It now turns out he has been hanging around Newcastle football club for the last few years, perfecting a slapstick routine that sees him run onto the pitch, get injured, and run off again to much laughter from the crowd.

With new signing Julien Faubert ruled out for anywhere up to six months, West Ham are keen to lighten the mood at Upton Park, and will bring either Dyer or one of those clowns that rides the really small bikes in to perform various party tricks next season.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE ROBBEN NEWS
As the front of this site tells you, Bernd Schuster expects Arjen Robben to be a Real Madrid player sooner rather than later.

The papers are split on whether they agree with him. The Independent certainly does, tipping Robben to be unveiled in a spangly new Real Madrid kit on Monday. But more than one of tomorrow's fish and chip wrappers report that Roman Abramovich has vetoed the move, and the Daily Express go so far as to proclaim that Robben has all but agreed a new five-year contract.

Incidentally, Chelski target Royston Drenthe has revealed he has made a decision on his future - but will wait for Feyenoord's word before disclosing his choice.

"I have already made up my mind. As long as it's not official I will keep the choice to myself. I am training and playing at Feyenoord at the moment," he said.

CITEH CLOSE TO LANDING ANOTHER STRIKER
Despite rumours yesterday that Jermain Defoe was at Man Citeh's training ground, they are expected to pursue Yakubu rather than Spurs' fourth-choice striker.

Indeed, the Daily Mirror reports that the deal is close to completion.

There was uproar in F365 Towers yesterday when Jeremie Alialialialialiadiadiadiere claimed that Boro could finish top six. Make no mistake - if they sell Yakubu and don't spend the money very, very wisely, they will be in big trouble.

So their first target, you'll be pleased to know, is ManYoo's Alan Smith, scorer of about four goals in the last eight years. Boro are going to splash £6m on the former Leeds man, who is reluctant to move to Teesside, but has been told he has no future at ManYoo, and no-one else wants him. Actually, that's not true at all - Everton want him too. And if they get him, Boro will turn to (snigger) James Beattie.

AFTER THE PALACIO AFFAIR, WHO KNOWS IF THIS IS TRUE?
The Daily Express reckon Arsenal are after Argentinian teenagers Angel Di Maria and Pedro Silva.

But then, as we've seen, anyone can start a rumour about Arsenal and Argentinians these days.
