Hamilton 1 - 1 Celtic

Celtic salvaged a point via a late penalty in a drama-filled clash with Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

Accies took the lead through Simon Mensing with Martin Canning seemingly in an offside position.

Referee Willie Collum dismissed Celtic's James Forrest and Hamilton's Jim McAllister after the break.

Mensing also saw red for a foul in the box, Anthony Stokes converting from the spot before having a goal disallowed deep into injury time.

The Parkhead side now sit five points clear of arch-rivals Rangers, but the Ibrox side have three games in hand.

Celtic had the bulk of possession in the early part of the game, but found it hard to break down the Accies rearguard with the home side pressing Celtic players whenever they were on the ball.

And it was the visitors who had the first real effort when Stokes flashed the ball across the face of goal, Accies keeper Tomas Cerny tipping wide.

Mensing then forced Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster to get down and save a weak shot after a neat one-two brought the Hamilton defender bearing down on the Celtic goal.

The Accies defence then somehow managed to escape going a goal down after Paddy McCourt cut the ball back across the Hamilton goal-line after a mazy run, but Mark McLaughlin blocked the shot from Forrest.

Then, against then run of play, Flavio Paixao's free-kick was parried by Forster's feet and Mensing was first to react by sending a looping header into the net, although Celtic manager Neil Lennon complained that Accies' Canning was offside as the ball was played in.

Celtic upped the tempo as they looked for an equaliser and Forrest should perhaps have done better when he blazed over the bar after a mazy run on the left.

And the visitors' task became harder when youngster Forrest was shown a straight red card by referee Willie Collum for a rash challenge on Hamilton's David Buchanan on 49 minutes.

Despite going down to 10 men Celtic continued to put Hamilton under pressure, but Emilio Izaguirre blazed a shot wide of Cerny's right-hand post after breaking out from left-back.

And referee Collum restored parity of numbers as substitute McAllister saw red after only 35 seconds on the pitch, the midfielder penalised for scything down Celtic full-back Mark Wilson.

With plenty of space available both sides pushed forward and Paixao tested Forster after beating Majstorovic before Celtic went straight to other end where Stokes was denied by Cerny's low save.

Accies were throwing bodies into the breach to block a torrent of Celtic attacks but Stokes managed to force a drive from the edge of the box which Cerny collected to his left.

And the Czech keeper pulled off a fine save as he threw himself to his left to tip an effort from the same player wide of the post.

McCourt played in fellow Nothern Ireland international Niall McGinn with a terrific defence-splitting pass but Cerny again saved Accies, parrying at the feet of the winger.

With only seconds left of normal time, Hamilton goalscorer Mensing saw the third red of the match after he blocked Izaguirre in the box, handing Celtic a lifeline.

Stokes sent Cerny the wrong way from the spot-kick to bring the sides level.

With six minutes of injury time played, Celtic threw everything at Accies in search of a winner and the drama continued as Stokes headed the ball into the net from Mulgrew's corner in the last action of the match.

But his celebrations were cut short when the assistant referee judged the corner had curved out before the Irishman connected.

Dundee Utd 2 - 0 Motherwell

Dundee United claimed victory in their first home league match since November as Stuart McCall suffered his first defeat as Motherwell manager.

Johnny Russell struck the post with a long-range shot during a promising opening spell by the hosts.

And it was Russell who broke the deadlock with a header on 53 minutes.

Motherwell came close when Jamie Murphy's header was blocked by keeper Dusan Pernis before David Goodwillie sealed United's win late on.

The win moves the Tangerines up to seventh in the Scottish Premier League, three points behind Motherwell who have played two games more.

United almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Johnny Russell's shot cracked off the post and the rebound evaded David Goodwillie, the subject of a failed transfer bid by Rangers last week.

Russell was involved again minutes later with a neat back-heel to set up Prince Buaben and the midfielder's shot was tipped wide by Motherwell goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

Goodwillie, back from suspension, had an opportunity to score when he burst through the Motherwell defence and rounded Randolph but with the angle for the shot narrow, the keeper got back to block the striker's shot.

Motherwell were struggling to get a foothold in the game and John Sutton's shot over the bar on 19 minutes was the visitors' first real attempt at goal.

Buaben stung the palms of Randolph with another fierce drive and the goalkeeper claimed the ball at the second attempt.

Morgaro Gomis was next to test the Motherwell stopper with a powerful shot and Randolph dived to his right to beat the ball to safety.

Sutton rose to head the ball against the frame of the United goal from Ross Forbes's cross but the offside flag had already been raised against the Englishman.

Forbes tried his luck with a free-kick from distance but the effort sailed over as Motherwell continued to struggle to get a foothold in the game.

Referee Iain Brines ignored claims for a penalty after the ball appeared to hit the hand of Keith Lasley in the Motherwell box.

There were further penalty claims in the opening minutes of the second half when Paul Dixon went down in the box but the United full-back was booked for simulation.

But the hosts continued to press and took the lead when Dixon's corner was headed back across goal by Garry Kenneth for Russell to steal in and nod the ball into the net with the aid of the post.

There was more work for Randolph to do when Goodwillie fired in a shot and the striker was once again foiled by the goalkeeper 13 minutes from the end.

Motherwell pressed for a leveller and Jamie Murphy met Chris Humphrey's cross with a goal-bound header only for Pernis to make a terrific save, Garry Kenneth bravely blocking the rebound effort.

United made sure of their victory when Goodwillie converted substitute Stuart Armstrong's cross with a shot from eight yards.
