Snooker commentator 'Whispering' Ted Lowe dies at 90

BBC Sport - Snooker commentator 'Whispering' Ted Lowe dies at 90

Former snooker commentator Ted Lowe has died at 90, the BBC has learned.

Lowe, who first commentated on snooker on the TV show Pot Black in 1969, retired after the 1996 world final.

He died on the morning of the first session of the 2011 Snooker World Championship final in Sheffield, with Judd Trump taking on John Higgins.

Lowe's unmistakable hushed tones earned him the popular nickname "Whispering Ted" and he was the BBC's lead commentator on many occasions.

Very sad timing and his voice will resinate in my head for ever.

"and for those of you who are watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green."

That will prob be the best thing to come out of a commentators mouth - that was Ted Lowe at his humble best. R.I.P. old man
