reading dm500s password

Hi everyone,

I have a dm500s that I would like to make a backup of, the only problem is that the trader that sold me the box has changed the root password so I cannot connect to it !

I can see the password by using Tuxbox commander and reading the /var/etc/passwd file, but it is obviously encrypted, so is it possible to decode the password so it can be used ?

I don't want to lose everything !!

Thanks.

Have you tried changing the password yourseld m8, details below.

To change your recievers password follow the instructions below

on your computer click start/run

in the box type cmd and press enter

a dos window will open

type telnet your recievers IP eg 192.168.1.9 press enter

youll see a login screen, type root and press enter

now enter your password, nothing will change while youre typing, this is normal, press enter

you will now be in your reciever

type passwd and press enter

enter your new password twice

I had trouble with Vista doing this but xp was fine....

Sorry for the late reply guys, I have been away, but thanks very much for the advice and it was just what I was looking for
