It's a bit more complicated than that but if a person is overweight because
they eat too much junk food, rather than because of a medical condition,
then yes you can lose weight by eating less fatty foods and carbohydrates.
Carbo's can be addictive and too many carbo's in a diet can make a person
put on weight but if you stop the carbo's suddenly and are an addict, then
it's sheer hell cos it's just like a junky going cold turkey! The only way
to beat it is to gradually cut down on the carbo's, trying to substitute for
complex carbo's that take longer to be absorbed into the system, rather that
give the "quick fix" of a bar of chocolate ( or 12 in some peoples cases!).
Anyone who is a carbo addict, can develop/have Hypoglycaemia and/or become
diabetic.

If you are overweight cos you eat too much, then cos of the large amounts
you consume, then you have to "educate" your stomach, by gradually eating
less so your stomach shrinks to expect less and eat a more healthy diet,
cutting out stuff like red meat that the body can't break down properly and
which mostly stays on the body.

Of course anyone wanting to lose weight, should also exercise, not just so
you burn the calories faster but to tone up the muscles and skin so that you
don't end up with huge rolls of stretched blubber hanging off your belly
like some weird kind of festoon window blind!

You won't lose weight that way, you lose fat but gain muscle and muscle
is heavier than fat.
