Cause
Strain usually results from over-use of this group of muscles, as they are easy to strengthen but are often neglected while stretching.
Acute strains tend to occur in the proximal parts, and over-use strain in the distal parts, especially around the patella, as well as at the origins around the hip.
Quadriceps are also prone to impact which can cause a haematoma in the deep tissues near the bone.
Signs and Symptoms
Depending on whether the injury is sudden or gradual:
Discomfort over the anterior thigh
Local tenderness over the site of muscle fibre tear
A gap may be felt in the area or torn muscle fibres
Difiiculty on contracting the muscles and walking with knee flexed
If intramuscular haematoma present, symptoms may be more severe
Treatment
RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
After 2 - 3 days of RICE begin treatment, depending on if there is a haematoma present
Treat quads (especially at attachments) trigger point release
TFL (tensor fascia lata) and ITB (ilio-tibial band), adductors
Hamstrings
MET quads and hamstrings
At Home
Gentle stretching of quadriceps, to increase number and repetitions as injury improves
Contrast therapy to the muscle
If the injury is severe, strengthening exercises will need to be prescribed following the subacute stage of the injury.
If it is a minor injury full function should be restored within 3 weeks.
