I was speaking to a family friend earlier, who is a copper, who told me that PSNI officers have been instructed to seize any set top boxes they see, when they are in a house that they have either raided or been invited into. They then pass the boxes onto Sky,who examine them and decide to prosecute, depending on what viewing capabilities the owner had.

Strange.
Satellite receivers are not illegal. I do know where your coming from but never heard of that before.
Could be an issue if it was on certain channels.

AFAIK, In order to search your property they would have to have a warrant.
Warrants are specific to what is being looked for and are subject to PACE (POLICE AND CRIMINAL EVIDENCE ACT) so they can only search for or in relation to what is specified on the warrant.
EG: If they are looking for a stolen Television they cannot search in a drawer or small cupboard as a TV would not fit in there.
If you invite them into your Home and they suspect the law is being broken they would have to leave and return with a warrant relevant to their original suspicions.
