Been to Rat's, have rash to prove it ;)
Got some memory the other day, I had two 128mb 100mhz dimms. Bought 2 256mb 130mhz, the bloke at the shop said the speed of the memory would not matter is this right ? He also said I could alter the speed in my bios if I wanted, how do you do this and will it make a difference ?

Happy New Year everyone.

Just been in my bios and altered the something which was set at 100mhz to 133 mhz all this has done is make my processor 800mhz, is this good as the processor is only a 600mhz really or is it bad ?

Soz I didn’t answer the last time. It’s just that I am not over familiar with bios settings. If you have a fairly modern Mo-Bo it should have PnP capabilities for your CPU which is what you have changed by the sound of it. It looks like you have inadvertently attempted to overclock the CPU. This is not really my forte, but a jump from 600 to 800 would be a bit too much I think. But in any case if you have an AMD processor I don’t think it wouldn’t allow itself to be changed without doing something to the chip physically. It would be best to change back to original setting I think.

If you look in the Advanced Set-up page of the bios. If it’s the same as mine! Second from the bottom is Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk. Try setting this to Enabled. But like I said in the other post the Motherboard would obviously have to support it the speed.

Sorry I cant be more help m8, but I wait for a reply from someone more experienced…JD or Junglist???

almost certainly, a P3 MBO will autodetect RAM clock speed so you shouldn't have to do anything to settings. Just don't mix the two speeds of RAM.
Just check on the boot screen where it will tell you the RAM speed to make sure all Ok.

Hi M8
The memory should be ok running at the normal bus speed of 100 mhz, the setting you changed is the cpu clock speed which in effect is overclocking your system by 33 mhz. You may be ok running this but some system boards dont like overclocking and you may need to set the pci clock speed to compensate for the extra speed. Another point the shop may not have mentioned is its not a good idea to mix the memory ie 100 & 133mhz as they sometimes create clocking problems. If your system was running ok at standard speed then i would suggest you restore the speed to 100 mhz as your system may become unstable if overclocked.

If your motherboard runs ok using a p3 at 800 then use bus settings at 133. Is the chip deffinately an 800. If so then I do believe that its tweakable.

Thanks all. My machine is a p3 600 mhz I have turned it down to 700mhz, dont want to be greedy, I have bought another 256 mb dimm so both slots have the same speed memory in so this covers the different speed issue. Any thing else I need to know ?

Lucky you I have a P3 800mhz and it is clock locked which is a bit of a bugger...

Most PC133 Mem will run at 100MHz ok but not the other way around the same a OC'ing your Processor, you should be "OK" running at 700 as long as you have got good cooling to the Processor otherwise it may make a tsssss noise then is dead.

huggi was right ur mem being 133 & 100 it will all run at 100 but check whether ur motherboard will run 2 x 256mb dimms some will not

I think that we sould all be looking towards the future now with ddr ram. Any feedback on that one lads?
Sorry for keep editing.

I doubt that there will be any reasonable notice in speed unless you are running graphics card flat out with some kind of speed game. I got my xp1700 going at just over 1.4 at the moment and my p3 800 - Well I cant tell the difference.

Now theres a thing. I have on board graphics and in the bios settings there is one that says AGP and a setting of 64k. Is this my graphics allocation and can I alter this ? I have played with it and it can be adjusted but was unsure asto if I was in the right ball park and this was indeed my graphics card setting I was altering.

There was something else I was meaning to ask but I have forgotten now, thats what the edit button is for I suppose.

As for cooling I have the standard fan on the CPU and have and extra fam on the case drawing the air out, it is also bl***y freezing here.

Oh that was it, davidh you said check the board supports two lots of 256 , how do I do that, all i know is that my memory check on boot up goes up like the petrol pump.

Without knowing the exact hardware u are using it is not really possible to give accurate advice. Check out the read files that comes with MB etc.

Hi Dutcho

Even if your machine is a time machine have a look at chipset and look to c if you can see any identifying part nos etc in silkscreen on the board, then go to www.motherboards.org/ the site has loads info tech specs etc etc, this may help.
