New statistics out today from media regulator Ofcom show that around 3.386m digital terrestrial television set-top-boxes are now in use, with 3 million UK households having at least one box.

The regulator says that strong sales for Freeview boxes during the Christmas period caused a 41% increase in DTT take-up during the fourth quarter of 2003 when compared to the previous quarter. Ofcom offers an estimation that 1.9m of the households use Freeview adapters, 525,000 use integrated digital TV sets, and 510,000 use former ITV Digital equipment. The total number of boxes on the market are, according to Ofcom, in the region of 600,000 ITV Digital boxes, 2.261m Freeview adapters, and 525,000 IDTV sets. The difference in the figures is a result of some households having multiple STBs for second sets.

By comparison to other platforms in the multi-channel market, 3.26m homes take an analogue or digital cable TV service, and 6.893m homes in the UK take pay TV from Sky.
