No Ringtone

Just finished building me new toy today (xp1700). Everything worked perfect first time except for the modem. Cheap internal PCI Motorola. Yes I installed correct drivers, yes to settings and yes I think to irq's. The modem is recognised in control panel on comms 4. I tried my external modem through the serial port and no probs. It seems to be working but I keep getting the message 'No dial tone' I wonder if its buggered?

well m8 i would buy myself a new modem i presume ur new board has an amr slot, so get an amr modem they are supposed to be faster although never seen no proof of this!

It is a brand new modem straight out of the box. Anyway its working now, the thing is its silent which means that you dont know whether you are being connected until connected if you know what I mean. I have come accross a few of these in the past. I think that the piezzo may be faulty. Most internal modems are aither too loud or too quiet. Changing volume settings seems to have no affect.

How would an AMR slot make a modem faster ?

If my understanding is correct then the modem which transmits data and recieves data is at the mercy of the transmission media...eg. the cable connecting the user to the local exchange ..usually twisted copper phone wire.
This cable was originally designed for speech use only thus has a low bandwidth, developers have got around this by using more advanced standards such as v.90 (and also isdn).

So changing the modem and slot to amr would in my mind only increase data transmission throughout the pc's bus and not between the user and the server.

but im probably totally wrong again ?

Hi M8
Had this problem before.

1. Are you using an extension lead from a socket.
if you are does it have all wires connected.
Some modems require all connections to work
correctly.
2. Have you tried a new cable from modem to phone
socket.

Ive tried 2 different leads and both work fine with my external modem. Upon close inspection of the plug it looks like 3 contacts only.

Xp has an option to turn off the dial tone, so it will be silent.

Juat turn it back on

Most modems just run on a 2 wire cable, if you find you have a cable that works and one that doesnt try crossing over wires 2 & 3, thats normally the cause of the problem.

If you wanting to increase your data throughput with a standard phone line, make sure all other phones are disabled on the phone network in your house, office etc....and that your modem is connected directly in the main inlet socket to the building your in, this will reduce the noise on the line, and should also give you that extra few "K" conections!!!

For example, b4 a was connected using and extension lead to the phone socket, and there were 3 other phone in the house, i was only getting a 33600 connection. Once i connected into the inlet box directly, and disconnected the other phones from the netwok, i average a 50 - 56k connection...
Who told u that?? AMR modems are the slowest kak that money can buy, it's a just somewhere to plug the phone line, all the comunication is perfomed by your CPU in software.

External modems give the best performance.
