Veteran actress Dame Thora Hird has died at the age of 91.
Her long-time agent said that "the entertainment industry and Britain has lost one of its true original stars." The news follows the announcement earlier this month that the star had suffered a stroke.
The BAFTA award-winning actress is probably best known for her role in the long-running BBC series Last Of The Summer Wine, which she joined in 1985. However, she has been in numerous other productions such as Meet The Wife and two Talking Heads miniseries. Her work was not restricted to television, having appeared in a plethora of films.
In her later years she gained notoriety for appearing in a series of TV ads for stairlifts, but still kept working on Last Of The Summer Wine - appearing recently in a new run of that series on BBC One.
