Networking Pc's

Hi all, I'm new to this networking stuff, I have 2 computers, one is connected to an ADSL connection, the other is standalone without any connection, I would like to be able to network the 2 computers so that I can share files between the two, and also use the ADSL connection to access the net on both machines, I've never tried anything like this before and would be grateful for any advice, ie what hardware/software I would need to do this.

Much appreciated.

first thing you need is a basic network.
get two network cards and a crosover cable. Stick a network card in each PC and connect them using the crosover cable.

next thing you need is proxy software, I use winproxy 4, its easy to use and works perfectly. Stick this on the machine with ADSL, configure it and your ready to go. you could use windows ICS(internet connection sharing) but i dont like it much

Things to think about:
Location of PCs (how longs your cable)
Do you want anymore PCs connected in the near future?

If you post some more info about the machines (OS, speed) and location i may be able to help out more.

Cheers m8, ok here's the extra info, one machine is downstairs, the other upstairs, both running win '98 on celeron 600 processors with half a gig of ram in each, I have an Alcatel 512k ADSL modem in one machine, I won't be attaching any other PC's to the network.

I do have all the later versions of Windows available, but prefer '98 to the later ones, any info is much appreciated.

In that case you need
2 10/100 network cards appx 10 Squids each
a long ebough cable to go from upstairs to downstairs (CAT 5 crosover cable around 5-10 squids).
If your running the cable trough the firplace or through any walls then use "Low halogen" cable (this helps if your house is burning down as it doesnt give off as many toxic fumes)
put a network card in each PC and link the cable and thats the hardware side sorted.
On the software side -
first thing is to assign each machine an ip adress on the same subnet.
Next install your proxy software (winproxy) amd your done

hope this helps - if you need anymore info just ask.

Chameleon, thanks a lot m8 for your help, I'll give that a try at the weekend. Don't do away, I may need you again...

c0sm0ss
I got myself the Trust x4 network kit for £37 it comes with three pci network cards 10/100mb and one pci sever card with a four port HUB built-in 10/100mb
And three five meter cables all in a nice big box
Works great............try here www.trust.com for more info. Once your network is up and running, have a look at WinGate for your proxy software, it doesn't take any configuring and works very well with your modem.

cheers guys for all the advice, watch this space I may need some more at the weekend.

i used to use wingate but it uses the same port as norton antivirus for checking pop3 email. Couldnt get it configured so went back to ICS. all you have to do is allocate a static ip to the gateway (internet connected) computer ie 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and then make everything dhcp on the second pc. never had much problem with it. Even have XP on my machine upstairs now and it still works

I think that was exellent helping and also think this should go up as a stic**, note, or postit it was that good.

i have a question if you have two pc's networking say one downstairs and have the other one upstairs, and the one upstairs is turned off and your on the one downstairs can you access the harddrive of the one upstairs still??? or do they have to be both on???

Dobs....no m8 they all have to be 'on' to see them on the network.
At home I tend to leave my Win XP machine (mail & browsing..) on all the time an just log on/off as required (because I can see the discs once it's 'on'), the Win ME machine, 'MY'work machine is on as/and when required.

EH ?

Just use Networking Wizard in Win ME and task sorted (XP probably has better networking setup utils).
