Need Health Advice Please !! Urgent !

We got our gran sectioned, she wouldnt accept that she had a mental problem.. Very repetative, roaming the streets at night, going to shops to buy the same things every 10 minutes..

The doctor told us she was perfectly fine, he did however advise that she should not stop smoking as shes 80 and fit as a fiddle.. we got a secton oppinion who said there was nothing wrong...

So we got her sectioned under the mental health act through the social services as she attacked a child.. turns out she has MS.. obviously she will never be released from the care shes in now but it was a god send as we was able to diagnose what was wrong with her..

m80 i dont think ms would do this , mE! maybe but defo not ms.
maybe altsimers?

sorry m8 but ms is not a mental health problem ms is when the milon gets damaged and makes walking talking and doing every day things harder .mental health is a hole diff thing m80 .

yes got to agree with Mapman my arl fella has MS and he hasnt lost the plot at all. i know it comes in stages but the symptoms you describe are more reminiscent of depression i gree with tina on this one you need to find the root of the problem and mend that first.

I would also reckon to seek NHS counselling advice.. doctors see it the other way when folk having eating disorders (ie. dont feel like eating) which result in deteriorating health..

PS: Slasher your avatar is magic bigman..

all you guys have been very helpfull, so thanks for that guys :), we are still trying to figure out what we are going to do for this lass, but all your thoughts have certainly made us think of a few ideas, thanks very much :)

Sorry guys wrong health problem posted in my post... my ignorance with the understanding of each one confused me..

Sorry for the confusion and any disrepect cause to anyone

my first port of call would be mind and other charitys or the local community mental health team..but the most important is dont believe them all as they can be wrong...this saved my own life as i would not except that i did not need a brain scan....good luck

if u want my advice

get her out of the house

keep her away from busy crowds

take her for walks around the park and try get her mind off what she is obsessing

force her to try and get some sort of life and routine that doesnt involve sitting in her house by herself obsessing over her problems

i found things like feeding the ducks, going to airports and watching planes take off, mountain bike rides, socialising without alcohol, eating healthy etc
i agree, all through reading the other repiles i was focusing on what the guy originally said in a rough form of depressed not eating and down. and all the while thinking, why not get her out and about . enjoying distractions in what form she likes like quiet walks feeding ducks sight seeing etc. something to look forward to. to enjoy etc. and in time realise the world is beautiful and enjoyable and hopefully will feel better about herself and hopefully aide recovery and a wellbeing again xx ( summik like that anyways ) xx

The drinks to help with weight are Fortijuice. They are very expensive,in the sense that one or several to take each day and come in different flavours. They are available on prescription, maybe from a doc or might have to be from a hospital doc, such as a consultant.

Regarding the weight---depending on the bodies frame, weight will vary. If your friend is on valium,i guess the doc thinks it,s mental health treatment first. Six stone sounds light but as said it depends on the frame.

I wouldn,t like to comment on the treatment but the easiest treatment for your friend from you is to love and look after her in every way you can. Remember medication takes time to take effect (could be weeks or months),so keep an eye out to see if the medication is helping or hindering.Could be a long process, you never know!

Getting the person out and about isn,t always as simple as people think. Listen to the person foremost, and act accordingly. Whatever the cause is, love, affection, trust and understanding sure help in the first steps.

Hope this helps a little for you!

Health drinks, body building shakes?! WTF, **** off!

What this lady needs is sectioned into a psychiatric unit, treated with Valium and a SSRI type drug (Google it if you are unsure) and given some tender loving care and encouragement.

She needs to be slowly reprogramed out of her current self. It's obvoiulsly a mental illness, no health shake or body suppliment will ever help her.

Her GP is a prick and a disgrace, in no way whatsoever will Valium help her, apart from a short term solution it's a completely useless drug, it cures nothing but causes a shit load of other problems.

Short term = a few hours per pill, what good is that to anyone?

Skybabe's right mate get her on the supplement drinks you can buy them over the counter at just about every chemist/supermarket theres one called complan it fairly cheap around 2-4 quid and is available in a few flavours.Get her drinking around two to three of them a day and you soon see a difference but don't forget its important to get her eating well again so try getting a few small light meals down her.The supplement drinks/meals are available on perscribtion from the docs as well theres one called paediasue its available in milkshakes porridge and desserts and is defiantly recommended for someone so under weight. Getting her intake sorted will help along way in getting her mentally fit aswell. You could also ask her doctor to put you in contact with a nutrition specialist also and im sure they will be able to help alot more.

Hope this helps mate

I think in your situation I would pay for her to see a qualified hypnotherapist.
Unless they sort out the cause, then the symptoms will always be there.

look to the voluntary sector m8 there is lots of groups out there that will offer you some great advice

For a start your attitude and language leaves little to be desired. People are posting opinions that might be helpful. Fortijuice is a prescribed medical drink that you can buy. It is not and i repeat NOT a body building drink. If she is in a state of mind, the doc is treating her for that. I,m not a doctor nor pretended to be. Her weight loss, appetite could be affected by her mind. The doctor is obviously treating the mind, most likely seeing if this affects all over condition.

Prescribed medication will also affect her mind,so it will be a waiting game to see for change. I don,t think for one minute the doc needed to call for sectioning, although depending on circumstances he might at some date. One swallow doesn,t make a summer. It might not be long a term illness, but if depression is diasgnosed it could be any amount of time without any cure. Then it will be learning to live with it,maybe with the correct drug, lifestyle etc

You are right about valium,it can cause other problems, but for some it works.I personally thought it odd that the patient is prescribed this drug first. I would have thought something like amytriptyline might be one of the first, but there you go.

I personally have said i,m no doc, that is why i wouldn,t offer any medical advice, only an opinion based on what is being said. Neither would i put my foot in and say get the patient sectioned, there may or may not be a time for that, but that depends on the whole picture concerning the patient. This would of course change if the patient became a danger to herself or others. This is where and why i said the patient will need looking after in the very least by love and affection etc. Maybe the friends of the patient might have to see some kind of authority about her condition at some stage, but through a doc will only be on his terms ie when he has exhausted his avenues.

Opinions only,i.m not a doc.....but for the patient and friends i hope it turns out ok sooner rather than later ,whatever the outcome. You have to break the viscious circle by one means or another.I wish you well.

valium is highly adictive. Depending on the dosage the G.P gave her,2mgs,5mgs 10mgs or higher? How many times a day. It is a addictive and also used to cure stomach aches and pains. if she takes the valium continuously she will look to increase rthe dosage. Some g.p. will give this to her. her weight is not right should be about seven to seven and a half stone. Anxiety causes weight loss, so does worry, stress, and not eating properly. With stress people cannot eat properly as they find they are constantly full and do not need nourishment.
ADVISE ON THIS? transfer this friend to anorthe reputable doctor with a proven track record who does not rely on prescription hypnotics used for depressive illness. If he is worth his salt he or she will do a full blood count to see what she is lacking and also liver function tests, chlosteral, and tryglryrite levels. She should be taking a good food supplement at present such as ENSURE> can buy in any chemist in all flavours, and some vitimins VIVIOPTAL? best on themarket, not cheap, but have everything the body needs.
Check out the options here? and take her to a doctor who may also be able to treat depressive illness?? Just in case the lady is in need of it.Every body at some stages in theri lifes will develop depressive illness,it comes to us all,. Like the common flu,it is cureable in the right hands and by the sound of it, you are indeed worrried about this lady, so some care and proper medical advise and she will come round in a short period of time.
Best of luck

excellent advice mate, thanks, and i will keep you posted :)

There are a wide range of supplementation products to increase weight and most are available on prescription.

try for ensure , fortijuice, fortisip drinks as they are very calorific and will aid in weight gain.

As for the diazepam, im not too sure it is the right rug , it is not an antidepressant. If your friend is on antidepressats , try and make sure she is taking them as compliance is very important.

You could maybe try self help gropus also .

Good luck

.
Just another quick tip. If this lady is in need of professional help, and i am not pre empting this. a good g.p. may advise phycholigical intervention. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, will take a lot of money for sessional therapy and she will never be cured. If she attends a good psychiatrist,he or she may or may not prescribe medication on a decreasing scale with continuous psychotherapy and certain relaxation tapes.
On your national health , it is in the interest of psychologists and psychiatrists to find a cure and quick, and get people off their books. in the private arena the cure can take longer as your are paying big bobs.
Just keep this in mind

If this lady can be moved to another home/enviroment with company that won't crowd her.She may or may not feel comfort, and a sense of sanctuary and will respond in time.Don't forget the blood tests, this will tell her a lot.
Best of luck

doctors can only send a letter to a mental health trust requiring evaluation

the only shrink you will be able to see at short notice is either private or attempted suicide and end up in hospital

the nhs is completly overbooked with depression and anxiety
