A man has died after his pet Rottweiler savaged his head, it emerged today.

In horrific scenes, police discovered the animal mauling its owner, who is believed to be in his mid 50s, in the middle of a London street.

The powerful dog, which officers described as "dangerously out of control", had to be distracted while armed backup arrived.

It is believed that it was shot dead at the scene in New City Road, Newham, east London, just after 7am yesterday.

Paramedics rushed the critically ill owner to the Royal London Hospital but he died at 10pm last night.

The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "The victim has died from his injuries. The dog has been destroyed."

Neighbour Gulam Mustafa said he saw police outside his home yesterday afternoon.

He said: "I was just going out. There were two officers and I saw some blood on the pavement."

I was quite outraged when the man who was interviewed and lived in the house were it happened said that "I heard some noise looked out of my bedroom window and saw the dog attacking the man this went on for about 5 minutes until the police arrived" (or something like that, 5 minutes watching from the window while a dog mauls a man to death ! did he not even think of getting off his arse and trying something to help ??? I couldn't just watch something like that happen even if i was scared i would try to do something ! throw a stone @ the dog 'shout 'anything really. BUT NOT JUST WATCH.:handball:

if it was a rottie why the pic of staff ?

i been involved with staffs for many years at my local staff rescue and stuff, and its always the staff that gets the bad press.

they are bred for fighting and to be handled by humans in the pit without fear of being bitten, which is why they respect us so much, that's the breed !! that's why when you walk in from work he acts like he ain't seen you for 6 months, especially the kids, as long as hes in the house no-one will ever hurt the kids.

sorry started to drift off topic there, but it pi$$es me off how the staff always gets the bad press most probably written by someone whose never owned one. :Kickassro

Here here! well said!

very sad, just goes to show what damage this type of dog can do. should be muzzled when there outside tbh, as should a lot of other breeds as well.

better him than some poor 2 years old child...............if you have these dangerous breeds as pets you should be prepared for the consequences

Any dog no matter what breed or size can kill or attack it's owner, it depends on how they are treated and if a mutual respect is built up with the animal.

It's just when it's a fighting dog breed they know it sells papers and the hype goes on.

I have a dalmation, soft as any thing but if I go up to it and start mis treating it I bet he would turn on me, and his teeth are as big and as sharp as any dog, but would it make such big headlines ? I think not.

Rottweilers ain't on the dangerous dog list!

Looks like the story is as acurate as the picture that goes with it.

I'm always suprised they never mention the breeder only breed.

I know what your saying mate but take your dog for example, a Dalmatian, now idont know much about these but i know there working dogs and I'm sure they bred them for running, escorting the old kings & queens horse carriage's, they are boisterous and quite difficult to handle ( if he is and your not wanting to breed him get him the snip, stops testosterone and calms dogs right down, but sometimes to much) unless your firm and understands that your the alpha male. but great dogs, great with kids too and they crave human companionship as much as staffs and like the staff hate being left on there own. but that's the Dalmatian breed, thats how they were bred to be and you can train and teach your dog woteva but you cant change the breed.

now cos some sick fookers of years gone by wanted a perfect fighting dog, which had to have the lot, stamina , strength , fearlessness but the main thing was for the owner to be able to enter the pit whenever necessary without fear of the dogs attacking him, so after mixing, matching, and cross breeding any aggression towards humans was bred out of them and after a good while of mixing and matching a bit more they came up with the staff ( the proper old original staff 16" - 18" like mine  they are still about) and Ive never known a staff to attack a human ever ! ...well apart from one of the rescue dogs i was temp looking after, he decided to rip my mates face off for no reason at all, we were sat on the floor playing cards when the dog just lunged at his face, took me 20 mins to get him off, but after the vets post mortem he said the dog had a massive tumor on his brain which must have been driving him nuts and in total agony and in the end it drove him over the edge and flipped.

you never see a staff as a guard dog (even tho there nasty fighting dogs) because there pants at it, they would greet the robber with a toy and want to play. Again thats the way they are bred and you cant change the breed
